Seraphina’s POV
I made it through most of the day without issue. Thank god for Mags and her incredible ability to take notes. Two more classes to go. My skin started to heat as I gathered everything from my locker for the last two periods of the day: Math and History. Curse this school uniform. I briefly consider ditching the sweater but math can sometimes get chilly so I guess I’ll keep it on. I close my locker and turn toward down the hall toward D wing where the Math room is.
“Sera” Chip waves his arm frantically from the other end of the hall. “Hey Sera over here.” I veer slightly in his direction. “Are you okay?” You look a little sweaty.”
“I’m just feeling a little warm.” I say “I’m sure it will be fine, did you need something? I need to get to class.”
“I really wanted to thank you for earlier. I didn’t really get a chance but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate you sticking up for me.” He states shyly looking at his feet.
“It’s no big deal. Listen I need to run but I hope to see ya around. We should maybe hang out.” I walked into class as the bell rang. I slid into my seat as Mr. Porter called to open our books.
“Class please… ook.. ge..two…” His voice seemed to get further and further away. And then almost faded out completely. The room became almost unbearably hot.
Minutes no hours no days passed in seconds. Why was it so Goddamn hot in this suffocating room? Where did that thought come from?
“Mr. Porter May I be Excused to the restroom?” I raised my hand and asked interrupting him mid-sentence. I really have no idea what he is talking about right now.
“Of course Miss Sanders. You may proceed down the hall to the ladies room.” He blinked at me and stepped back out of the way as I passed in front of him.
The bathroom was tiled. Stalls lined one wall and a row of white porcelain sinks the other. I sat on the cool tile floor and tried to cool off. I felt like I was burning from the inside out. I was so hot even the brush of my clothes felt as if my skin might peel right off of me. I opened the cold water on one of the sinks and ran water over my hands, splashed it over my face. When that didn’t do much I contemplated sticking my whole head under the spray.
So very hot. Why am I so hot? I stripped off the over sweater and unbuttoned the crisp white shirt of my school uniform. Just as I was about to strip down to my bra, the bathroom door swung open.
I shrieked and pulled my shirt back closed again.
“Seraphina?” Maggie stood just inside the doorframe “Are you alright?”
“Mags! Somethings wrong with me! I can’t cool down, I’m burning up! I’m Super hot and nothing is working to cool me at all!” I screech at near the top of my lungs. Maggie, my best friend, who would never hurt me and I’ve never seen as a threat, took one careful step toward me, and all HELL or should I say Heaven broke loose. One second she was coming toward me, the next she was thrown back against the wall.
In a flash of tremendous white light, all the heat inside of my body was released and with it and pair of pure White 10 foot wide feathery wings appeared out of nowhere. The wings ruffled, settled around me like a protective shield. I knew two things immediately.
I was no longer HOT and 2) My Mother was going to KILL me.
“MAGGIE???” I yelled
“Ugh” came the groan from behind the wings. “Sera… can you…um… put them away…??” she asked
“I really wouldn’t even begin to know how to do that, I don’t know how they got here in the first place.” I said shaking my head, then realizing she still couldn’t see me behind my white shield.
“Uh… Wings relax?” I said out loud like an i***t. To my surprise a small hole opened in the front so I could just see out in front of me. “Thank you… a little more please?”
“I don’t think that’s how it works Sera.” Mags said laughing at my attempt to talk down the ginormous feathery wings in between us.
“Well do you have a better idea?” I snark at her
“Imagine them retreating behind you in your head, maybe it's like folding up a table… I don’t know.” She says.
I do as she suggests and try to imagine the wings folding back behind me. They way a bird folds their wings back or drawings of dragons holding back their wings. My shield retracts and and folds back behind me. I feel a line tingle down my back and over my torso and thighs, tracing a delicate pattern all over my shoulder blades and ribs, down my spine, over my thighs to the very tips behind my knees.
“Maggie please look at my back.” I tell her
“Whoa that’s so wicked. Now I want one even more!” She tells me.
On my back is a perfect replica the wings that were real just seconds before, in very intricate detail.
