Major Lewis was carefully filling his pipe and I was sitting there after Boyd’s hurried departure, getting a little annoyed at his lack of industry. We were still sitting when Flora came in; no doubt would be yet if she hadn’t. That was my thought at the time. I should say that later I realized that Major Lewis was an exceedingly active man and spent very little, if any, time uselessly. Flora said Catherine preferred to see Major Lewis in her sitting-room. Lewis took no notice of the fact that the girl’s eyes and nose were red from crying, which I made a mental note of.
