Her eyes flashed dangerously and faster than I expected, she launched forward again.
However, this time I was ready as I ducked low, sweeping my leg beneath hers.
She lost her balance, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a sharp curse. I was on her in a second, pinning her wrist before she could strike again.
“You don’t want to start a fight with me,” I whispered, her breath was ragged, but her glare didn’t waver.
In the next moment, footsteps thundered down the hall and at the same time, Kade’s scent hit me first, before his voice, sharp as a blade. “What the hell is going on?”
I pushed off Ivy just as Kade strode into the room, his silver eyes burning with fury. Damon was right behind him, his expression unreadable as he took in the scene.
Ivy shot up, her voice turning soft and innocent. “She attacked me.”
I scoffed. “Oh, please.”
Kade’s gaze flicked between us, and for a moment, no one spoke, after a while, he exhaled sharply, pinching the bridge of his nose like he was seconds away from snapping.
“Ivy.” His voice was quiet, but the warning in it was unmistakable. “Get out.”
Her eyes widened. “But..”
“Now!”
Her lips pressed into a thin line, but she didn’t argue. With one last glare, she turned and walked out, slamming the door behind her.
At that, silence stretched between us as Kade’s gaze locked onto me. “What did you do?” He asked afterward.
I crossed my arms. “Defended myself.”
His jaw ticked. “Ivy is a high-ranking pack member.”
I shrugged. “Then she should fight better.”
Damon choked on a laugh, Kade shot him a sharp look before turning back to me.
“You’re making enemies fast, little rogue.”
I met his gaze head-on. “I’m used to it.”
Upon hearing that, a glint flickered in his eyes almost like respect.
Meanwhile, before I could move, he was in front of me, closing the space between us in a single step.
“You’re testing my patience,” he murmured.
I tilted my head. “Good.”
His eyes darkened, and for a second, the air between us shifted, his wolf was close to the surface, I could feel the tension rolling off him in waves.
But before he could say another word, a low, eerie howl echoed in the distance.
Kade stiffened, and Damon’s smirk vanished. “That came from the west border.”
Kade’s gaze snapped to me. “Were you being followed?” My blood ran cold, I had hoped and prayed I lost them, but deep down, I knew the truth, they had found me.
The howl faded into the night, but the weight of it pressed against my chest like a warning.
‘They were here.’
I forced my expression to stay neutral, but my heart pounded against my ribs as I had spent months running, hiding, always staying one step ahead and I had never been caught, not until now.
“Who are they?” Kade’s silver eyes pinned me in place.
I swallowed hard. “I don’t know.”
His jaw clenched, he knew I was lying.
On the other hand, Damon was already moving. “I’ll check with the patrols.” He shot me a look before disappearing down the hall.
Kade took a step closer, his presence suffocating. “Tell me the truth, Raine.”
I lifted my chin. “I told you, I’m a rogue. Stray wolves cross borders all the time.”
His nostrils flared. “Don’t play games with me.” I stayed silent and Kade exhaled sharply. “Fine, if you won’t tell me, I’ll find out for myself.”
He turned on his heel and strode toward the door, but before he could leave, I grabbed his wrist on instinct and his body tensed.
I immediately regretted touching him the next second as his skin was warm, his pulse steady beneath my fingers, but the instant connection that flared between us was unbearable as Kade’s wolf stirred beneath the surface, drawn to the mate bond I never wanted.
I forced myself to let go and his gaze moved to my hand, then back to my face. “Stay in this room.” It wasn’t a suggestion.
Anger surged through me. “I can fight.”
A muscle in his jaw ticked. “I don’t doubt that, but you’re weak. You’ll only slow us down.”
His words were like a slap across my face as I had spent my entire life surviving on my own, fighting my way through blood and shadows. ‘Weak?’ No one had ever dared to call me that, in the next moment, he turned away, disappearing into the hall.
I should’ve stayed put, but my instincts screamed at me to move, I counted to ten before slipping out of the room.
The pack house was massive, but I kept to the shadows, following the scent of fresh air until I reached a side door. The crisp night air hit me as I stepped outside, scanning the tree line.
Figures moved between the trees, their glowing eyes barely visible in the darkness, at least five or maybe more. They weren’t Blackwood wolves, this were hunters and they weren’t just looking for any rogue, they were looking for me.
A cold chill crawled up my spine as a familiar voice echoed from the shadows.
“Did you really think you could run forever, little wolf?” My blood turned to ice.
‘No, no, no, no.’ I knew that voice. I will never forget it.
A man stepped forward, tall and broad, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement. His face was carved with sharp angles, his presence drowning out everything else around him.
‘Ronan.’ My breath caught in my throat.
I hadn’t seen him in years, but the nightmares never let me forget, he was the reason my old pack was slaughtered.
The reason I had been running my whole life and now, he had finally caught up to me, his smirk deepened. “Did you miss me?” He asked.
However, a growl rumbled behind me, I turned just as he stepped into the clearing, his silver eyes glowing with fury.
Ronan’s smirk faltered as he took in the sight of the Alpha standing between him and me.
Kade’s voice was low, deadly. “Touch her, and I’ll rip your throat out.”
