CHAPTER 10

422 Words
As the days passed, I found myself hyper-aware of my surroundings. Every shadow, every unexpected sound made me jump. I scanned faces in the crowd, half-hoping, half-fearing to see Ethan again. But there was no sign of him, or of anything out of the ordinary. And yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was different. It was as if a veil had been lifted, allowing me glimpses of a world I'd never known existed. I began to notice things I'd overlooked before – the way some people seemed to move with an almost predatory grace, or how certain individuals always seemed to be watching the woods with wary eyes. One evening, as I was closing up the bookstore, I overheard a conversation that made my blood run cold. Two men were talking in low voices just outside the shop, clearly unaware that I was still inside. "...getting bolder," one of them was saying. "Coming into town in broad daylight. It's dangerous." "The Alpha knows what he's doing," the other replied. "We have to trust him." "And what about the girl? She's a liability. If she starts talking..." "She won't. Ethan's keeping an eye on her. Besides, who would believe her anyway?" I held my breath, hardly daring to move. Were they talking about me? About Ethan? The men's voices faded as they walked away, leaving me with more questions than ever. That night, as I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, I came to a decision. I couldn't keep living like this, jumping at shadows and drowning in unanswered questions. I needed answers, and I knew there was only one place I could get them. Despite Ethan's warning, despite the potential danger, I knew what I had to do. Tomorrow night, I would return to the woods. I would find Ethan, or he would find me. And this time, I wouldn't leave until I had the truth. As I drifted off to sleep, my dreams were once again filled with running wolves and glowing yellow eyes. But this time, instead of fear, I felt a thrill of anticipation. Whatever secrets the woods held, whatever truths Ethan and his kind were hiding, I was determined to uncover them all. Little did I know, my decision that night would set in motion a chain of events that would change not just my life, but the lives of everyone in our small town. The moonlight had revealed a new world to me, and I was about to step into it, ready or not.
