My heart pounded in my chest as I watched the creature emerge from the darkness. It was massive, with sleek black fur and muscles that rippled with each step. A wolf, but unlike any I'd ever seen before. Its eyes, intelligent and fierce, locked onto mine, and I found myself frozen in place.
The wolf stalked towards me, its lips curled back in a snarl. I knew I should run, but my legs wouldn't obey. Just as I thought it was about to pounce, another figure burst from the trees.
It happened so fast, I could barely process what I was seeing. One moment, the figure was human-shaped; the next, it had transformed into another wolf, this one with silver-gray fur. It leaped between me and the black wolf, growling a challenge.
The two wolves circled each other, teeth bared and hackles raised. I watched in stunned silence as they lunged and snapped, a whirlwind of fur and fangs. The silver wolf fought with a fierce determination, driving the black one back until, with a final yelp of pain, it turned tail and disappeared into the night.
As the echoes of the fight faded away, the silver wolf turned to face me. Its yellow eyes, so similar to the other wolf's and yet so different, regarded me with an almost human intelligence. Then, before my disbelieving eyes, it began to change.
The transformation was both beautiful and terrifying to behold. Fur receded, limbs elongated, and within moments, a man stood before me where the wolf had been. He was tall and lean, with tousled dark hair and those same piercing yellow eyes. And he was, I couldn't help but notice, completely naked.
I felt my cheeks flush as I quickly averted my gaze. "I... um... what...?" I stammered, unable to form a coherent sentence.
The man – if that's what he truly was – chuckled softly. "You're not dreaming, if that's what you're wondering," he said, his voice deep and slightly husky. "My name is Ethan. And you, I assume, are the curious human who's been wandering too close to our territory."
I blinked, trying to process his words. "Our territory? There are... more of you?"
Ethan nodded, a wry smile playing at his lips. "More than you might think. But let's save that conversation for another time. Right now, we need to get you out of these woods. It's not safe for you here."
As if to emphasize his point, another howl echoed in the distance – angry and challenging. Ethan's expression darkened. "Come on," he said, reaching out a hand to me. "I'll escort you back to the edge of the forest."
