I hesitated for a moment, every rational part of my brain screaming at me not to trust this stranger – this creature that could transform from wolf to man. But something deeper, more instinctual, urged me to take his hand. As our fingers touched, I felt a jolt of... something. Energy? Recognition? I couldn't quite place it, but it left me breathless.
Ethan's eyes widened slightly, and I knew he had felt it too. He quickly composed himself, gently pulling me to my feet. "Stay close," he murmured, his voice low and urgent. "And whatever you do, don't run. It'll only excite them."
As we made our way through the darkened woods, I found myself stealing glances at Ethan. He moved with a fluid grace, his bare feet barely making a sound on the forest floor. I had a thousand questions burning on the tip of my tongue, but the tense set of his shoulders and the way his eyes constantly scanned our surroundings kept me silent.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we reached the edge of the forest. The lights of the town twinkled in the distance, a beacon of normalcy in a world that had suddenly become anything but normal.
Ethan turned to me, his expression serious. "Lily," he said, and I started at the sound of my name. How did he know it? "I need you to promise me something. Don't come back into these woods alone, especially not at night. It's not safe for you here."
I nodded, still too overwhelmed to speak. Ethan's eyes softened, and he reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face. The touch sent another spark of that strange energy through me. "Go home now," he said softly. "And try not to think too much about what you've seen tonight. It's better that way."
With that, he turned and melted back into the shadows of the forest, leaving me standing alone at the edge of two worlds – the familiar and the unknown.
