CHAPTER 3

746 Words
Drawn by an irresistible curiosity, Lily reached out to trace one of the symbols with her fingertips. The moment her skin made contact with the rough bark, a jolt of energy surged through her body. She gasped, stumbling backward as images flashed through her mind – glimpses of moonlit nights, of figures running through the forest on four legs, of eyes glowing in the darkness. As quickly as it had come, the vision faded, leaving Lily breathless and disoriented. She blinked, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Had it been real, or merely a product of her overactive imagination? Before she could ponder the question further, a twig snapped behind her, and Lily whirled around, her heart pounding in her chest. There, at the edge of the clearing, stood a figure shrouded in shadow. For a moment, Lily thought it might be another hiker, someone else who had wandered too far from the trail. But as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she realized that this was no ordinary person. The figure was tall and muscular, with broad shoulders and a stance that spoke of barely contained power. And its eyes – Lily's breath caught in her throat as she met its gaze. The creature's eyes glowed with an otherworldly amber light, fixed upon her with an intensity that made her knees weak. Time seemed to stand still as they regarded each other across the moonlit clearing. Lily knew she should be terrified, knew she should run screaming back towards town. But something held her in place, a strange sense of recognition that defied all logic. She had never seen this creature before, and yet... there was something achingly familiar about it. The silence stretched between them, taut as a bowstring. Then, with a grace that belied its massive size, the creature took a step forward into the light. Lily gasped as she took in its appearance – the powerful limbs covered in dark fur, the elongated snout, the pointed ears. It was a wolf, and yet not a wolf. There was an unmistakable intelligence in its eyes, a consciousness that went far beyond that of any animal she had ever encountered. As if in a trance, Lily found herself taking a step towards the creature. She should have been terrified, should have been running for her life. But instead, she felt an inexplicable sense of calm wash over her. The creature – the werewolf, her mind supplied, though she could scarcely believe it – regarded her with what seemed like curiosity, its head tilted slightly to one side. Just as Lily opened her mouth to speak, a howl echoed through the forest, startlingly close. The werewolf's head snapped up, its ears pricked forward. It cast one last, lingering look at Lily before turning and bounding off into the shadows, leaving her alone in the clearing. Lily stood rooted to the spot, her mind reeling as she tried to process what had just happened. Part of her wondered if she had imagined the entire encounter – perhaps she had hit her head, or eaten some strange berries that induced hallucinations. But the memory of those amber eyes, so wild and yet so human, was too vivid to dismiss. As the adrenaline began to wear off, Lily became acutely aware of her surroundings once more. The forest suddenly seemed much darker and more menacing than before. With shaking hands, she fumbled for her phone, using its GPS to guide her back towards town. As she walked, her mind raced with questions. What had she just witnessed? Were the legends true? And why did she feel so drawn to that creature, as if some invisible thread connected them? By the time Lily emerged from the woods, the streets of Willow Creek were deserted. She made her way home in a daze, barely registering the familiar sights around her. As she climbed the stairs to her apartment, exhaustion hit her like a physical force. She collapsed onto her bed, still fully clothed, her mind whirling with the events of the night. As she drifted off to sleep, Lily couldn't shake the feeling that her life had irrevocably changed. The encounter in the woods had awakened something within her, a longing for knowledge and adventure that she could no longer ignore. Whatever secrets the forest held, whatever truths lay hidden in the shadows, Lily knew with absolute certainty that she would stop at nothing to uncover them.
