chapter 14

The tension in the air was thick as Kaelen stood before the two powerful figures—her presence had stirred something deep within them. Their wolves were restless, aching to claim what they had been searching for. But the coldness in Kaelen's gaze made them hesitate, the bond between them now undeniable, yet she refused to yield. The larger twin stepped forward first, his gaze intense, but his voice was tempered with patience. “Kaelen, you don’t have to fight this.” She met his eyes without flinching. “I don’t need you or anyone else controlling me.” He paused, taken aback by the fire in her words. “We’re not here to control you. We’re here because we need you.” Kaelen's expression hardened. “You don’t even know me. Don’t expect me to submit just because you want me to.” The other twin, his voice low but urgent, added, “We’re not here to possess you. We’re here because you’re our mate. This bond is real, and we need you to help us.” “I didn’t ask for this,” Kaelen replied, her tone icy. “I didn’t ask for any of it.” The twins exchanged a look—understanding flickered in their eyes, but they could feel the frustration building. They knew they couldn’t force her to accept them, but the pull was so strong, so magnetic, that it made their control slip. “We’re not trying to take anything from you,” the first twin said quietly, almost pleading. “We’re trying to give you something better. We’ve been searching for you, Kaelen. You’re the one we need.” Kaelen’s eyes softened briefly at his words, but she quickly regained her composure. “I don’t need you. I never have.” His jaw clenched, frustration turning into something more primal. “You don’t have to do this alone, Kaelen. We’re here. We can help you.” “I don’t need your help,” she snapped, her anger flaring. “I’ve spent too much of my life fighting to be my own person. I won’t be anyone’s possession.” The second twin took a step forward, his voice softer but no less intense. “But you feel the bond, don’t you? You know we’re meant to be together.” Kaelen clenched her fists, the mate bond gnawing at her insides. She hated how strong it was, how impossible it was to ignore. But she wouldn’t let it control her. “I feel it,” she admitted quietly, “but that doesn’t mean I’m going to let it take control of me.” The first twin’s eyes darkened, his restraint slipping. “We won’t stop, Kaelen. We won’t give up on you. You’re everything we’ve been searching for.” Kaelen shook her head, more resolute than ever. “I’m not your prize to claim. You’ll get what you want from me, but on my terms. Not yours.” The silence that followed was heavy. The twins exchanged another glance, a silent understanding passing between them. They would wait. They would be patient. But Kaelen’s words had struck a chord deep within them. They hadn’t expected this resistance, and they certainly hadn’t anticipated how much it would hurt. The second twin’s voice broke the stillness. “We won’t leave you, Kaelen. Not now that we’ve found you.” Kaelen stood her ground, refusing to show the vulnerability that clawed at her chest. “You’ll have to wait. But make no mistake, I won’t be controlled. I’m not someone to be claimed. I will finish my mission, and after that, we’ll see what happens.” They could hear the uncertainty in her voice, the crack in her wall. But it wasn’t enough to make them back down. They were in this for the long haul, and nothing—especially her resistance—would change that. “We’ll wait,” the first twin said quietly, the weight of his words heavy with emotion. “We’ll wait for you, Kaelen. But we won’t stop. We will have you. And we’ll show you what it means to truly be loved.” Kaelen didn’t respond. She wasn’t ready to let herself fall for them, not yet. But she knew one thing for certain—the bond was undeniable, and no matter how much she fought it, it would remain.
