The 1982 Elections
As soon as Priscilla entered the reception area of Senator Callahan’s office suite, she encountered tension in the air. To be sure, she knew that the Senate Democrats were still fuming from their mortifying electoral defeat in November 1980 as well as from their more recent humiliation during the budget deliberations. But enough of the pity party, she thought.
Without waiting to be announced by Charlene, Priscilla made her way to Senator Callahan’s office, where the wrath of her boss awaited her.
“Well, young lady,” he began. “I’m glad you remembered where your place is. But how long does it take to drive someone across the country? I started wondering whether you’d even come back.”
