CHAPTER 30 A Defection in the Ranks Later that morning, Priscilla, and all the other Ohio Democrat politicos, learned to their chagrin that all was not what it had first appeared to be. Yes, they had won the election; but no, they did not automatically resume control of the Ohio Senate. The reason was that Senator Theopholus Madison—a man of immense political stature and seniority, and one of the two blacks in the Ohio Senate—was defecting from the Democratic Party ranks. Priscilla and many other up-to-then jubilant Democrats read the news in various newspapers and wire services. Their hard-fought electoral victory had been transitory.
