Northwest of the VILLAGE of NAVENCHAUC, MEXICO
Under the pink sky of early morning, Jason Jonas regards the skull rack. The device is made of two old-looking stone foundations that brace thirteen wooden rods that run through the temples of their grisly burdens. Most of them are mere skulls, dry and chapfallen, that grin as if time has acclimated them to their states. Those on the second row from the top have some flesh and hair on them. Those on the top row look only days old, and they retain the despairing expressions with which they must have died, as if their fates to them are still vivid. It is those that Jonas closely examines.
Five are the heads of Europeans or light-skinned Mexicans. Three are Mexicans of Native ancestry
