CHAPTER 4

313 Words
The First Sacrifice Ama held the earrings in her palm longer than she expected. They were small—nothing expensive—but they carried a weight far greater than gold. Her father had given them to her years ago, on a day she could barely remember now except for his laughter. For a moment, she almost changed her mind. But then she thought of Daniel. His exams. His future. Their future. She closed her fingers tightly around the earrings and stepped into the shop. The man behind the counter looked up. “You want to sell?” Ama nodded, placing them gently on the glass. He examined them briefly. “They’re not worth much.” “That’s fine,” she said quietly. The money exchanged hands faster than she expected. Just like that… they were gone. Ama stepped back outside, her heart feeling strangely empty. But she pushed the feeling aside. This wasn’t a loss. It was an investment. Later that evening, when she handed Daniel the money, he looked confused. “Where did you get this?” Ama shrugged lightly. “I’ve been saving.” Daniel studied her face, as if trying to read something she wasn’t saying. “You didn’t have to do this,” he said. Ama smiled. “I wanted to.” He took her hands, his grip firm and steady. “I swear to you, Ama,” he said, his voice low and serious, “one day I will repay every sacrifice you make for me.” Ama shook her head gently. “I’m not doing this to be repaid.” She paused, her voice softening. “I’m doing this because I believe in you.” Daniel pulled her into an embrace. Ama closed her eyes, holding onto the moment. Sometimes love feels like giving without fear. But sometimes… It asks for more than you realize you’re losing.
