PROMISES
The night before Daniel left felt different from every other night.
The air was quieter, heavier… as if even the world understood that something was about to change.
Ama sat outside her house on the low wooden bench, her hands resting in her lap. The sky stretched endlessly above her, filled with stars that seemed brighter than usual.
Daniel sat beside her.
Close—but not close enough to silence the distance already forming between them.
Neither of them spoke at first.
There were too many words.
Too many things they didn’t know how to say.
“You’re quiet,” Daniel finally said.
Ama let out a small breath.
“I’m just thinking.”
“About what?”
She turned to look at him.
“About tomorrow.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” he said. “Everything is about to change.”
Ama forced a small smile.
“Yes… everything.”
There was a pause.
The kind that holds more truth than words ever could.
“Daniel,” she said softly, “when you get there… when your life becomes better… You won’t forget me, will you?”
He turned to her immediately, almost offended.
“Forget you?” he repeated. “Ama, you’re the reason I’m going.”
She held his gaze, searching for something deeper.
“People change,” she said quietly.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not like that.”
He took her hands in his, his voice steady and sure.
“Listen to me. No matter where I go, no matter what happens… You are part of my story.”
Ama felt her chest tighten.
“I don’t want to be just a part,” she whispered.
“I want to be your future.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“You are my future.”
He pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her as if he could protect her from every doubt.
“When I come back,” he said gently, “I won’t come back alone. I’ll come back for you.”
Ama closed her eyes.
“Promise?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Daniel didn’t hesitate.
“I promise.”
The word settled into her heart like something permanent.
Unbreakable.
Certain...
They sat there for a long time, holding onto each other, holding onto a future neither of them had seen yet—but both believed in.
That night, Ama memorized everything.
The warmth of his hands.
The sound of his voice.
The way he said her name mattered.
Because somewhere deep inside her… There was a quiet fear she couldn’t explain.
The kind of fear that doesn’t shout.
The kind that whispers.
And sometimes…
Whispers tell the truth before reality does.
The next morning, Ama stood by the roadside as the bus carried Daniel away.
He waved from the window, smiling, full of hope.
Ama waved back, her heart full of belief.
She didn’t cry.
Not yet.
Because she trusted him.
She trusted his promise.
She trusted their love.
But as the bus disappeared into the distance, leaving behind only dust and silence…
Ama felt something shift inside her.
Not enough to break her.
Not enough to stop her from believing.
Just enough…
to change everything later.
