Chapter 2
Three years earlier, Ama had never planned to fall in love.
Love was a luxury for people who didn’t wake up every day worrying about rent or hospital bills.
But Daniel had walked into her life like a sudden sunrise.
They met on a rainy afternoon outside the community library.
Ama was hurrying home when she saw him standing under the roof, holding a stack of books close to his chest.
Water dripped from his hair.
His shoes were torn.
But his eyes were bright with determination.
“You read a lot?” she asked casually.
Daniel laughed.
“I read because I refuse to stay poor forever."
Something in his voice caught her attention.
Not arrogance.
Determination.
“What do you want to become?” she asked.
“Successful,” he said simply.
Ama smiled.
“That’s not a job.”
“It’s a destination.”
He looked at her then.
Really looked.
“And when I get there,” he said, “I’ll remember the people who believed in me when nobody else did.”
Ama didn’t know why those words stayed in her mind for days.
Maybe it was the honesty in his voice.
Or maybe it was the quiet fire in his eyes.
But that was the day something started between them.
Something neither of them expected.
And something that would change Ama’s life forever.
