Chapter 7

627 Words
A New World The city did not welcome Daniel. It swallowed him. The moment he stepped off the bus, the noise hit him first—cars honking, voices overlapping, engines roaring like restless beasts. The air felt heavier, faster, as if it refused to slow down for anyone. Daniel stood still for a moment, his small bag hanging from his shoulder. Everything moved. Except him. Tall buildings stretched into the sky, their glass windows reflecting a world he had never been part of. People walked past him without a glance, dressed in ways that spoke of money, confidence… belonging. For the first time in a long while, Daniel felt something unfamiliar. Small. He tightened his grip on his bag and forced himself forward. This is where I belong now, he told himself. This is the life I fought for. But the city had its own rules. At the university, it became clearer. Students spoke with ease, their words smooth, their laughter effortless. They talked about vacations, investments, connections—things Daniel had only heard about from a distance. He listened more than he spoke. Observed more than he joined. Adjusted. Because surviving here was not enough. He had to become part of it. That evening, as he sat alone in his small hostel room, his phone buzzed. Ama. He stared at her name for a few seconds before answering. “Hello?” Her voice came warm, familiar. “Did you reach safely?” Daniel leaned back against the wall, exhaling. “Yes. I’m here.” “How is it?” she asked, excitement filling her voice. “Tell me everything.” Daniel looked around the room. Plain walls. A narrow bed. A window that overlooked a street that never seemed to sleep. “It’s… different,” he said. “In a good way?” Ama asked. He hesitated. Then answered with the version of truth that felt easier. “Yes. In a good way.” Ama laughed softly. “I knew it. You’re finally there, Daniel.” Her happiness should have comforted him. And part of it did. But another part of him—quiet, growing—felt something else. Pressure. “I have classes tomorrow,” he said quickly. “Things will be busy.” “That’s okay,” Ama replied. “Just don’t forget to rest. And don’t forget me.” Daniel smiled faintly. “How could I forget you?” But the words didn’t feel as solid as they once did. They felt… automatic. “Goodnight,” Ama said. “Goodnight.” The call ended. Silence returned. Daniel stared at his phone for a long moment before placing it aside. Then he stood and walked toward the window. The city stretched endlessly before him—bright, alive, full of possibilities. It didn’t care where he came from. It didn’t care what he had been. It only cared about what he could become. And Daniel wanted more. More than survival. More than comfort. He wanted to belong in this world. To rise in it. To be seen in it. Behind him, his phone lit up again briefly with a message from Ama. I’m proud of you. Daniel glanced at it. Then looked back at the city. For the first time… He didn’t reply immediately. Not because he didn’t care. But because something inside him had started to shift. Slowly. Quietly. Dangerously. The city had opened its doors to him. And without realizing it… Daniel had already begun stepping away from the life that once defined him. Away from the girl who believed in him. Away from the promises he once spoke so easily. Because sometimes… change doesn’t announce itself. It simply begins. And by the time you notice it— You are already someone else..
