Chapter 1: Episode 3

387 Words
About an hour later, Faith and Favour were ready. Their bags were already packed in the car. Faith’s brothers and her mother were emotional — tears rolled down their faces. Faith couldn’t bear to see them like that; she teared up too. They stood by the car, holding her hands, while Mr. Adams checked the vehicle to make sure it was ready for the journey. “Faith,” her mother said finally, his voice firm yet full of love, “I want you to remember everything I’ve taught you. Don’t involve yourself in anything just because others are doing it. What’s wrong is wrong. There is no excuse for a conscious sin. Life is more spiritual than you think. Read well and make me proud. That school — your father has eyes and ears everywhere. Don’t disgrace us.” Faith nodded, holding back tears. “Yes, Mummy.” “The same applies to you, Favour,” Mrs. Adams added, her voice trembling. “Be your sister’s keeper. You both should take care of each other. Correct her when she’s wrong or going astray.” Tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke. “Mom, I will make you proud. And as God liveth, I will never go against my beliefs or principles,” Faith said, tears streaming down her face. Her younger brothers held her tightly by the waist as though they didn’t want her to go. “Mom, we will be on our best behavior and spread the gospel in every form and situation,” Favour added as both girls hugged Mrs. Adams tightly. Tears ran freely down all their faces. Mr. Adams cleared his throat gently. “We should go now, my dear. A word is sufficient for the wise. You’ve said it all — it’s best for them to listen. Come on, get in the car, let’s go. I need to be back before dawn.” They broke free from the circular hug. Mrs. Adams placed her hands on their heads and blessed them softly. The girls entered the back seat. Mr. Adams kissed his wife gently on the forehead and wiped away her tears. “It’s okay, dear. She’ll be fine,” he said reassuringly. Then he entered the driver’s seat. Faith’s mom and brothers waved their final goodbyes as he drove off.
