On their way, a soft Christian worship song played in the background. Faith and Favour hummed along, sometimes singing the lyrics, sometimes whispering short prayers in between. The windows were rolled down; the gentle morning breeze touched their delicate skin, and they blessed God for the journey.
A few hours later, they arrived at a massive building surrounded by a lively crowd. The name of the university was boldly written across the front gate: “Divine Choice Golden University.”
Faith and Favour’s eyes widened as they looked out through the window while Mr. Adams drove in.
“This is more beautiful and bigger than I thought,” Favour said, excitement written all over her face.
“For real, this is big,” Faith added in amazement.
Mr. Adams smiled proudly. “During my time here, it wasn’t this big though. New buildings and renovations have made it one of the biggest universities in town. A whole lot of things happen here — it’s a new world compared to what you see and know.”
He parked his car in a space near the administrative office. “We’ll come down here. Let me assist you with your registration before I leave.”
“Okay, Dad. Will you also take us to our hostel?” Faith asked.
“I will. I just can’t remember where the girls’ hostel is located, but don’t worry, I’ll ask someone,” he replied.
They got out of the car and walked into the admin office. Faith and Favour were amazed. Their eyes scanned every corner of the building. The place buzzed with activity — students chatting, moving files, and laughing. Some were dressed differently from what Faith was used to seeing.
They got to the front desk, greeted the receptionist, and were directed to a less busy staff member. They began their registration, which lasted for about an hour for both of them.
Mr. Adams met an old lecturer there — one who no longer taught but had come with his daughter to help her settle in. They exchanged greetings and introduced their daughters to each other.
After the registration was completed, Mr. Adams drove behind his old lecturer, who was still familiar with the school environment. The man knows the girls’ hostel well since he still came by occasionally to assist with difficult courses.
When they got there, the girls were assigned rooms. Faith and Favour were to stay in the same room as their registration code had stated, while the lecturer’s daughter stayed opposite their room. They finished up with payment and inquiries, and were told to compulsorily read the hostel rules and make sure to follow them.
After a few more processes, they were finally escorted to their rooms by the hostel mistress — an elderly woman both Mr. Adams and the lecturer knew. They laughed and teased Mr. Adams about his school days while Faith, Favour, and Anna, the lecturer’s daughter, followed gently behind, holding a few of their bags and scanning the environment in silence.
“Have you been to the university before today?” Anna asked.
“No, this is our first time. What about you?” Faith replied.
“My dad has brought me here countless times, sometimes after my closing hours when I was in high school. I don’t live far — about two buses from here.”
“Oh, that’s great,” Faith responded politely while looking around the place.
They grew quiet again until they reached their rooms.
The mistress opened the door. It was a small but comfortable room with two beds facing each other, a reading table, a big window, a bathroom, and a small kitchen. Faith and Favour loved it instantly — they couldn’t stop smiling.
“You girls are so lucky,” Mr. Adams said, smiling. “During my time, we didn’t enjoy such luxury.”
“Seriously, these new hostels are luxury compared to your time,” Mrs. Chan, the hostel mistress, said, standing at the door with a kind smile.
They both dropped their bags and walked around the room in admiration.
“I’ll leave you girls now. Mr. Adams, see you soon,” Mrs. Chan said as she left to check on Anna’s room.
When she got there, she saw the same excitement on Anna’s face and smiled softly before walking away.
Mr. Adams turned to Faith and Favour. “Now, there’s no going back. Remember, this place has been paid for. I’ll leave you two at this point. You heard all your mom said at home before we left. I know this school — I’ve been through it. It’s going to be tough, but if I could do it, you can too. Avoid bad company and conspiracy. Be there for each other and mind your business. I’ve said my own — I’ll leave the rest to you and to God.”
“Thank you, Dad. We’ll do our best to make you proud,” they both responded, hugging him tightly.
“I trust you will,” he said. “Now, I have to head back home. The journey isn’t easy. Come and help me get the rest of your bags.”
Faith and Favour dropped what they were holding and followed him downstairs. They collected the remaining bags from the car, waved him goodbye, and he drove off.
Faith couldn’t hold back her tears; she cried as he drove away. Favour gently patted her back.
“It’s okay, Faith. You don’t want us dragging attention — it’s too early; we just got here. Come on, let’s go inside.”
