Chapter 1: Episode 5

They carried their remaining bags upstairs, one after the other, until everything was in the room. They started arranging: hanging curtains, setting up their beds, organizing the reading table, and neatly folding their clothes into the wardrobe. The wardrobe was divided into two, and they each took one side. Time passed quickly — it was already about 7 p.m. Faith and Favour had both taken their baths and freshened up. They were satisfied with how beautiful their room looked, each having decorated their side of the space. They were dressing up when they heard a knock on the door. Faith called out sharply, “Who’s there?” Favour looked at her with surprise. “We just got here — are we supposed to be expecting visitors?” Then came Anna’s voice through the door. “It’s Anna.” They looked at each other, surprised. “Isn’t it too early to start making friends?” Favour said jokingly. Faith hurriedly wore her dress, tied a scarf around her hair, and went to open the door. Anna stood there, dressed casually in shorts and a singlet. “Sorry for disturbing,” she said softly. “I was done cleaning and wanted to go for a stroll around the school. I thought I should tell you guys, maybe you’d be interested.” “Oh, that’s so nice. Let me ask my friend, give me a minute,” Faith said. “Can I come in, please?” Anna asked politely. Faith couldn’t say no — she opened the door wide enough for her to walk in. “Hey, Anna,” Favour greeted with a smile. “Hey, Favour,” Anna replied. “I was just asking Faith if you’d both like to go for a walk around the school. I can show you some of the places I know, and we can also ask people around.” “That’s fine by me,” Favour said quickly, excitement in her voice. “I don’t think I’ll join you guys. I’m exhausted; I need to rest,” Faith said tiredly. “Come on, Faith, we’ll be back before you know it. Please don’t let me go alone,” Favour pleaded. Faith finally gave in after minutes of begging from both of them. They went downstairs together. As they headed out, Mrs. Chan reminded them to be back before 9 p.m. since the hostel doors would be closed by then. They nodded gently and left. They walked around the campus — from the hostel to the library, to the school cafeteria, and various department buildings, letting their legs carry them wherever their curiosity led. By 8:30, they returned to the hostel and headed to their rooms. At the door, Faith asked Anna, “Which department are you in?” “Theatre and Arts. What about you guys?” “Medicine and Surgery,” Faith said. “Favour’s in Psychology.” “Oh, that’s nice,” Anna smiled. “Classes resume on Friday for all freshmen. See you then. Good night, you guys.” Anna opened her door, and Faith caught a glimpse of her room before she closed it. “Her room is so pretty — and I think she stays there alone,” Faith said. “Looking at her, she acts like a spoiled last born,” Favour added, locking their door before laying down on her bed. Faith laughed softly. “But I like her.” “Me too,” Favour replied. “Well, it is what it is. Good night, Faith.” “Good night, Favour.”
