Sandcastles & Dumping Waves

1117 Words
Tessa POV: We got to the beach. Casey and Kimmy were out of the car before it was all the way parked. Which earned them a stern talking to from grammy. We all walked together down to the beach. I carried chairs that would fold down for us to sit. Casey and Kimmy carried towels, buckets and other beach toys. Grammy carried the umbrella, lunch, and sunscreen. We set up shop on a nice spot. “Can you play with us for a little bit?” Kimmy said in her baby voice trying to sound cute. She didn’t need to try hard, she was freaking adorable. Grammy was watching me from the corner of her eye to see what I would say. “Yes, I’ll play with you for a little bit.” I said. Casey challenged us to see how many sand castles we could build in ten minutes. Kimmy and I went to work. She was in charge of filling the bucket with sand. I was in charge of holding the bucket and flipping it when it was full. Kimmy was a perfectionist. She likes to have a level scoop before she puts it in the bucket. Casey was leaving us in the dirt. She wasn’t even using a shovel. Casey was using her bucket to scoop sand up. Kimmy and I had just finished our second one and Casey was already working on her third. A few minutes and grammy called time. Kimmy and I had lost, by a landslide. Grammy had laid out our lunch on one of the towels. We had turkey and cheese sandwiches, with grapes. A lunch that was made by Kimmy and Casey. Grammy went up to the lemonade stand with Casey and got us all lemonade. It was very refreshing and was sweeter than it was tart. We laid back, and enjoyed the breeze. We relaxed for a few moments as we sipped our lemonade. The theme music for the ice cream truck could be heard coming down the beach. Kimmy immediately jumped up. “Grammy! Grammy! Can we get ice cream?” “Sure dear, Tessa, would you like some ice cream?” “No thanks grammy, I think I’m going to go for a swim in a minute.” “You be careful! It hasn’t been a full hour yet. I don’t want you to get cramps.” Grammy said sternly. “I’ll be okay grammy.” Grammy took Casey and Kimmy to go to the ice cream truck. A swarm of kids were running toward the music with money or parents in hand. I sat sipping the rest of my lemonade. I was watching people run and play along the beach. My eyes caught a guy who was staring at me. He had sandy brown-blonde hair and brown eyes. He looked like he was mesmerized. His eyes burned into me. I looked away and looked back. This dude was still staring at me! I’m not going to lie, he was absolutely drop dead gorgeous. He towered over the other people at the beach. He looked like he was a lifeguard. His arms and legs were muscular, and he had a nice tan. I decided to push him to the back of my mind. I wasn’t going to go from one jerk off to another. I always picked the worst guys, so for right now I will pick no guys. I got up from my chair and walked towards the water. The water felt nice and warm. I relaxed and swam out further to get away from all the little kids in their floaties. There were a bunch of people here. There were surfers, jet skiers, and people parasailing. Far out you could see the people on their boats. I let my mind start to wonder, by the time I snapped back to reality it was too late. I had drifted towards a dumping wave. I was pushed under the water with so much force the air was knocked out of me. Water started to rush into my mouth and down my throat. I swam to the surface and coughed out the water and took a ragged breath as another wave slammed me back down. My lungs felt like they were burning. I had sucked in more water on the way down. I tried to fight against the waves. I felt my consciousness slipping away. I was blacking out as I saw a hand reaching for me. *Cough! I woke up to a bright light in my eyes. A face quickly blocked it out. I coughed out more water, and tried to breathe. “Hey, you're okay. Try to breathe and cough out any water. Can you tell me your name?” Said the guy sitting over me. My mind was blank for a minute. I was trying to remember what happened. I remembered the waves crashing down on me and the water burning my lungs. A hand reached out and grabbed me. That must have been this person. I looked at them and realized this was the guy who was staring at me before. “ Can you tell me your name?” The guy repeated above me. “Tessa, my name is Tessa.” I said ragged. “Tessa, you're going to be okay. An ambulance is on the way.” “Ambulance?! Wha-No! I can’t go to the hospital. I need to find my Grammy!” I went to get up and my body felt heavy. I started to fall back down. The guy caught me in his arms. His touch sent tingles up my arm. I flinched away and looked at him with a confused look. He cleared his throat and looked away. “ Oh my goodness Tessa!” I heard Grammy cry out. Grammy, Casey, and Kimmy came running over to me with ice cream cones in their hands. “What happened?!” Casey said. “ She was hit with two dumping waves. They pushed her under and she almost drowned. An ambulance is on the way to take her to the hospital.” “Tessa, are you okay?” Casey and Kimmy said in usion. “I’m fine, I’m not going to a hospital.” I said. “You need to go, complications can present even hours after almost drowning.” The guy said. “You are going to that hospital young lady!” Grammy said. “What is your name?” I asked the guy. “My name is Corbin.” He said with a smile that looked filled with love. It made me uncomfortable and I wondered why he was looking at me like that as I heard sirens approaching.
