My first day of work was going like any job would start out.
I sat and learned about how to make things on the menu and their policies and what-not.
I learned this pizzeria is run by triplet brothers. Larry, Gary, and Barry. Larry is the one who is here on the daily running the operations. Gary runs the finances and Barry takes care of ordering and sourcing inventory and ingredients.
They are all identical, but it is comical when they all get together.
My phone rang; the caller id showed my grandpa was calling.
“Hey grandpa what’s up?”
“Hey, I just got a call from your grandma. Apparently Tess almost drowned at the beach. She is heading to the hospital now. I was just letting you know okay.”
“Sure grandpa thanks. Is Tessa okay?”
“Yeah she is fine, some lifeguard was able to save her.”
“Okay good. I guess I’ll keep an eye on her these next few days. I’ll make sure she is okay.”
“Thanks kid, you’re a real diamond in the ruff sweet pea.”
I hung up the phone and shook my head.
I wonder if this is just the beginning of her acting out for attention or if this was genuine.
The next few hours seem to go by slowly. I had two hours left on my shift and I was looking forward to going to bed later.
The restaurant was empty and so I started sweeping. Larry was in the back office doing his work and Janice left an hour ago. Janice also happens to be Gary’s daughter. She doesn’t refer to Larry as uncle because she doesn’t want everyone to know they are related. The bell rang letting me know someone had come into the restaurant.
“Hello, welcome to Brick Oven Pizzeria!” I say in a cheerful voice turning to look at the customer.
I was surprised to see a tall handsome man with slicked back brown hair. He was wearing a suit and tie. He was ridiculously tall and his muscles bulged under his suite. He had piercing silver eyes, which were glued to me.
He mumbled something under his breath that I didn’t catch. My body felt tingly all over from him staring at me.
“Will you be dining alone or will others be joining you?”
Before he could speak the door opened and a beautiful woman walked in. She wore a tight pencil skirt with a slit in the thigh. Strappy heels and a deep V-cut blouse. She had beautiful red hair that was half up and half down. They must be husband and wife, they looked good together. The man looked like he was about twenty three years old and the woman looked like she was maybe twenty.
“Are you sure you want to come here? This place doesn’t look… high quality.” The woman says looking me up and down with a look of disgust.
I decided to ignore her insult.
“No, I will eat here alone. I will have them drive you home. I didn’t ask for company tonight.” The man says coldly to her as he walks further into the restaurant and closer to me.
The woman looks shocked, and she opens her mouth to protest.
“Have a lovely night Maria.” The man says with a tone that conveys finality.
The woman closes her mouth and pouts before turning on her heel quickly and storming out of the restaurant.
“ Sorry about her, she may be an adult, but she acts like a child more often than not.” He says.
“I’m sure your wife just wanted to enjoy a nice dinner with her husband.” I say offering a smile.
I find the man staring at me, which makes me blush.
“What gave you the impression that she was my wife. Do you see a ring on my finger?”
“Oh, I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions. You both just looked so well dressed, you looked like you just went together.”
The man seemed to consider this for a moment.
“I’d like that table in the back corner,” he says.
We walk to the table in the back corner.I feel his eyes glued to my body. I noticed he never said the woman wasn’t his girlfriend. This table gives the most privacy. The man sits down and I hand him a menu.
“May I get you something to drink?”
“I’ll take some water please Sabrina.” He says looking at my name tag. The way he says my name sends a heat wave over my body.
I nod and walk away, I can feel his eyes never leave me.
When I return he is ready to place his order.
I put his order for lasagna in.
The restaurant sold mostly pizza, but we also did soups, salads, and pastas.
I went back to rolling silverware at the counter. Every few minutes I glanced up to meet the man’s gaze, before looking back down quickly.
Why was I reacting like this? I
wasn’t the type of girl to get flustered by a man. I focused on work and school. I decided to stop looking at him, and only interact to deliver his food.
After a few minutes his lasagna was ready.
I was walking it to his table when I noticed he was on the phone. It seemed he was having a heated discussion. Irritation stretched across his face. When he saw him coming he quickly mumbled something into the phone and ended the call.
“ Here you are! One order of lasagna. Is there anything else I can get for you?”
“Yes you can join me. Please Sabrina give me five minutes of your time.” He says with a heart stopping smile.
