Prologue

Prologue     Lucifer.   The beast of Hell stood tall and haughty, his pristine black wings curved behind his brawny back. He had been walking these lands for ages, they were governed by another, but now they were his own.   The chapped ground wailed with every rest of his taloned feet and his strong, heavy built marked his new territory.   A strongly distinct scent lingered in the air, ever delightful to his acute senses. The smell of death, of the blood of the conquered surrounded him, he was used to its potency for he slayed thousands per day, he was a killer, he fed on souls of the weak. He existed to destroy.   His bowed horns pointed at the red sky, scrunching his nose, he smelled it.   Life.   The fragrance of a living soul blending with the asperse odour of death. The femininity infiltrated his nostrils, he had never smelled anything quite like it, he could not understand the feelings the scent was triggering from him.   Inhaling the mortal's scent was so satisfying, each subtle whiff made him more hungry. His demons were awakened, they were drawn to the human female, they liked her.   Lucifer was intrigued enough to put the purposeless wander to a halt. He turned around as the light foot falls sounded to be getting farther and farther away from him. His raging silver eyes darkened as he stared at her.   He stretched his magnificent wings and flew over to her, startling the girl as he landed roughly. Her raven black hair was swept off her shoulders by the gush of wind as he ruffled his wings and pinned his glowing eyes on her. The girl blinked repeatedly, playing with the cotton strings dangling from the waistband of her pink pyjama shorts.   "Hey," The girl's voice was the sweetest he had ever heard, not laced with fear at all, no creature had ever addressed Lucifer in such a manner, "do you live here?"   His demons' fascination heightened as that entreating smile played on her lips, her honey coloured eyes gleamed with a gentleness that was unknown to him. He could not understand why the mortal little girl was not afraid of a beast like him, just as much as he could not understand how the attenuated eyes of the living could discern his presence, his form.    "This is my domain, this is no land for a little mortal girl like yourself." The Devil's voice was intimidating, his tone was naturally affraying and threatening, but Mabel was not frightened, in fact, she felt magnetized by the creature. He made her heart thump irregularly, but in a good way.   "Well… I might be a little lost," Mabel admitted with a shy grin, her brows creasing in thought, "I don't know how I got here honestly, the last thing I remember is going to bed.. but since you live here, maybe you can help me get home?" Lucifer frowned at the request, prompting the young girl to bat her eyes and ask more sweetly.   "Please, please, pleeeaassseee...I need to go back home before mommy and daddy start to worry and you're the only one who can help me, please sir, pretty please?"   Lucifer found himself crouching down to the girl's level, her beauty was so rare and her innocence so mighty, she wiped away the negative scent of death.   "Who is this mortal and why is she affecting me so?" Lucifer asked himself as his eyes examined her face. Mabel eyed him curiously as well, seemingly hypnotized by his lucid eyes.   "What is your name, little girl?" He asked. The King of The Underworld never offered any aid to anyone, he was not a courteous creature, he never did anything unless it would benefit him, yet he could not resist her urging eyes.   "My name's Mabel, what's your name?" Despite her current predicament, the girl's tone remained spunky and her eyes full of vigor.   "Mabel.." His demons hummed as the name left his lips. "I have many names, but for your sake, you can call me Lucius."   "That's a very nice name." Mabel complimented with a smile, she did not know Lucius, but he interested her and she desired to befriend him.   Lucifer sneered, the girl was truly naive. How could a lamb be so comfortable in the presence of a wolf?   He could easily harm her.   He could easily feed on her soul and end her existence, like he did with most mortals he encountered, but strangely, he did not want to. He wanted her alive, breathing and speaking, he was slowly becoming addicted to her scent.   "How old are you, little human?" The girl looked no older than a demon girl six centuries old. She was too young, yet she had such great influence on him.   It was baffling.   "I am nine years old, but I always feel older than that, I'm not like the girls at my school."   'So young.'  Lucifer thought, musing over the piece of information.   She was talkative as well.   He needed to keep her.   "You should not be here, there are a lot of monsters who could rip a little girl like you in half." Again he tried to induce some fright in her, again she proved to be immune.   Mabel looked around, pursing her lips as her eyes met his again. "I have not seen any monsters here, maybe they're sleeping?" She joked, Lucifer tilted his head slightly and narrowed his eyes.   "No monsters?" He scoffed raspily. "You are staring at one right now."   "You're not a monster, you're beautiful, monsters are not beautiful… maybe you're just a little lonely, we can be friends.. if you want."  She gasped lightly as his eyes flickered to murky red.   "We want her, claim her!" His demons growled viciously. He could not deny the desire.   For six hundred thousand millenniums, Lucifer refused to take another as his, as his other half, as his Queen, as his mate. The Beast of Hell ruled alone, he bedded as many women as he pleased but never fell in love. From women, he only sought pleasure and release, those were the only needs they could fulfill. They were otherwise a grating encumbrance only meant to weaken and dissolve power. He was content with governing Hell alone, he did not want a mate, a mate was useless to him. He did not want to incur the liability of a woman that would cling to him and enfeeble him, he could not take a mate, for he was an exterminator, he was incapable of loving.   The thought of having a mate was repulsive to him, mates were absolutely unnecessary and he detested the natural occurring association.   Or so he thought.   All it took to alter his perspective, was for a mortal girl's soul to wander to his realm while she sleeps, a realm that should not be accessible to the Living.   "I will take you home," the girl's face lit up, but Lucifer continued before she could thank him, "but know that from this day onward, you are MINE."   Mabel's beatific smile expanded at what she thought were words of acceptance of her offer of friendship. "I'm so happy you want to be my friend Lucius, I have a lot of friends, you won't be lonely anymore."   "I am not lonely," the beast acquired a contradictory defensive tone, "and, we are not friends little human, my demons want you, I have chosen you as my mate."   Mabel frowned in confusion, but remained bubbly and ignorant nevertheless. Mate, friend- one and the same thing, her British friend called her mate all the time.   "Okay we're mates then… so when are you going to visit me? I know you live here and all, but I promise my home is very fun."   "I will come for you on your eighteenth birthday, mate." He responded curtly.   "I won't be eighteen in like so long," Mabel pouted in faux contempt, "why can't you visit me sooner? Please?"   Her naivety never ceased to amaze him, she was truly innocent and uninitiated.   And all his.   "You are too young to be my bride, had you been of age, I would have taken you to the belly of The Underworld without hesitation."   Bride? The Underworld? Mabel tried to decode his words.   His demons were discontent and furious.   The wait was going to be grueling and long, but after six hundred thousand millinea, he could wait for nine years. That was not even a decade.   "Okay.." her tone deflated, she leaned into him, wrapped her arms around him and hugged him. Upon contact, her new friend winced, his warm body went rigid, as though he had never been held in such a manner and thought she was attacking him.   "What are you doing, little Mabel?"   "Hugging my mate… I'm going to miss you Lucius… I'll don't know this place, but I'll come here again and we can talk and do some fun stuff, it must be so boring here."   She felt such a robust connection to him, which surpassed her compassion.   He looked lonely and she pitied him, but pity wasn't the only feeling he incited from her. That preponderant feeling she was beyond her ken, she was not mature enough for such discernment.   "My little mate, you're my mine, you will save yourself for me, I will take care of you until you are of age, and I won't have to hurt anybody as long as you are a good girl. Is that clear Mabel?" The girl shuddered lightly as Lucifer purred close to her ears.   She didn't believe he was a monster, she saw only the good in him, he only loved acting like a monster.   "Yes, I'll be a good mate to you.." She detached from him, unclasping the pendant on her neck and giving it to him. "Here's something to remember me by, please don't lose it, my nana gave it to me and you can keep it until you visit me."   Lucifer held the small diamond pendant, he felt her energy vibrate through his palm. The nine years seemed to be a billion years too steep, again.   "I would never forget you, you are mine," his finger traced the ridge of her flustered cheek and the red of his transcendent eyes deepened, "my little mate, how I can't wait to make you mine. You are mine and mine only, MINE, say it, say you're mine." He commanded, she did not cower, but she did not disobey him either.   "I am yours." Mabel did not know the implication of her words, she had bound herself to Lucifer, the Lord of darkness. "Don't worry Lucius, we are going to be mates forever."     She kissed his cheek.   She woke up in her bed.   That was the last time she saw him.   Over nine years, Mabel carried on with life, having forgotten that she was the Devil's mate.   Lucifer however, never forgot his human mate, neither did his demons.                               That was the weird prologue to a crazy story, I would love to know what you think!   Little disclaimer: I do not follow any mythology, I just let my imagination run wild and make up things as I go.
