Chapter 30: The Trail
Jay didn’t sleep.
He paced the hallway for hours, trying to piece together the message Ava left behind. “They’re coming for her.” Who were they now?
At dawn, he left before Lena woke up. He didn’t want her to see what he was about to do.
He drove to the old part of the city, to a building that should’ve been condemned years ago. Inside, the air was thick with mould and memories. He took the stairs two at a time, reached the top floor, and knocked on a steel door.
It opened an inch. A man with a crooked nose peered through.
“You again.”
“I need information,” Jay said, voice low.
The man smirked. “And I need to keep my life. Are you asking about them again?”
Jay pulled a thick envelope from his jacket and handed it through the c***k.
“Make it worth it,” the man muttered, stepping aside.
Inside, Jay sat opposite him in the dim light.
“They’re moving again,” the informant said. “But this time, they’re watching her. The girl. The one with the eyes.”
Jay’s blood went cold.
“They think you’re hiding something. Maybe Elijah gave it to her before he—” He stopped himself.
Jay’s jaw tightened. “Before he died?”
The man didn’t reply.
Jay stood. “If anything happens to her…”
“I know,” the man said. “Hell will follow you.”
Jay didn’t look back as he left.
