The Rival's Arrival

1158 Words
The morning sunlight spilled across the quiet street as Isabel hurried down the narrow road leading to school. She liked walking — it gave her time to clear her thoughts and feel grounded. Her neighborhood wasn’t far, and most days she enjoyed the breeze, the sound of chirping birds, and the distant hum of traffic. But today felt… different. There was a strange chill in the air — one that made her clutch her bag tighter. The light breeze whispered through the trees, but the shadows seemed to move on their own. She tried to ignore it, but the prickling feeling on her skin refused to leave. Someone was watching her. She stopped walking. Slowly, she turned. Nothing. The street behind her was empty. She exhaled, shaking her head. I’m just being paranoid, she told herself. But deep down, her heart was racing. She took a step forward—then froze when she heard it: a faint footstep, matching her pace from the darkness between the buildings. Her pulse quickened. “Stop hiding like a fool and show yourself!” Isabel shouted, her voice trembling despite her effort to sound brave. A low chuckle echoed from the shadows. Then, a tall figure emerged — his eyes glowing faintly under the morning light. He looked around her age, maybe a little older, with jet-black hair and a smirk that sent chills down her spine. “Well,” he said softly, “you’ve got more courage than I thought.” She recognized that grin — the same sinister smile from the night before. The man who tried to grab her before Xavier appeared. “You again,” she whispered. “Yes,” he replied, stepping closer. “We didn’t get a proper introduction last time. I’m Stephen.” He tilted his head, studying her like she was a puzzle he couldn’t wait to solve. “And I must have you to myself.” “Have me?” Isabel scoffed, though her knees trembled. “What kind of sick joke is this? I don’t even know you.” Stephen’s smile widened. “Oh, you will. See, Xavier likes you… and I want everything that belongs to him. That includes you.” Her eyes narrowed. “Xavier doesn’t own me. Nobody does. You can’t just want me because he does.” She took a firm step back, her voice stronger now. “If you’ll excuse me, I have something important to do.” She tried to walk past him, but in a flash, Stephen appeared right in front of her, blocking the path. The air rippled around him, charged with energy — dark, swirling, and unnatural. “You shouldn’t talk to me like that,” he said coldly. “You have no idea what I’m capable of.” Isabel’s breath caught. Her instincts screamed for her to run, but her body wouldn’t move. Panic rose in her chest, yet she refused to show fear. “I’m not scared of you,” she said — though her voice shook slightly. Stephen grinned. “You should be.” He reached for her, his fingers glowing faintly with a strange blue fire. She stumbled backward, her heart pounding wildly. The moment his shadow brushed hers, a surge of energy erupted inside her — like something deep within her had just awakened. A wave of sound burst from her throat — a scream so sharp and powerful that Stephen staggered backward. The force pushed him several steps away, his smirk fading into surprise. “What—” he gasped. “That scream… it’s not human.” Isabel covered her mouth in shock. Her voice wasn’t supposed to do that — it wasn’t normal. Stephen’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous curiosity replacing his arrogance. “So… you are one of them. I knew it. No human could do that.” “One of them?” she repeated, terrified. “What are you talking about?” Before he could answer, the air around them suddenly shimmered — and in an instant, a bright light burst through the space between them. “STEP AWAY FROM HER!” It was Xavier. He appeared like a storm, his silver eyes blazing with fury. Before Stephen could react, Xavier grabbed Isabel’s wrist, pulling her close. The ground trembled, the world around them blurred — and in the blink of an eye, they vanished into thin air. Stephen cursed under his breath, his fists clenched. “Enjoy your time with her, Xavier,” he growled into the empty air. “Because soon, she’ll be mine.” --- The world steadied again. Isabel blinked rapidly, her surroundings spinning before settling into focus. They were in a forest — quiet, isolated, and surrounded by tall, ancient trees. Her knees felt weak, and Xavier gently steadied her. “Are you okay?” he asked softly. “I… I think so,” she whispered. Then she looked up at him, her voice trembling. “He was waiting for me. He said he wants me because you do. Who is he, Xavier?” Xavier exhaled, his jaw tightening. “Stephen,” he muttered. “He’s not just anyone. He’s from my world — one of the dark heirs who thrive on chaos. I didn’t think he’d find you this soon.” “Your world?” Isabel repeated, confusion and fear swirling in her eyes. “Xavier, what’s happening to me? He said… he said my scream isn’t human. What did he mean?” Xavier’s gaze softened, though pain flickered in his eyes. “Because it’s true, Isabel. You’re not fully human.” Her heart stopped for a second. “What do you mean?” “You have power inside you — power connected to my realm. I don’t know how yet, but I’ve felt it from the first day I saw you. That’s why Stephen wants you. You’re more than just a girl from this world.” Isabel stepped back, shaking her head. “No… no, that can’t be true.” “It is,” Xavier said quietly. He stepped closer, his hand brushing against her cheek. “And that’s why I have to protect you, no matter what.” The warmth of his touch sent a shiver down her spine, melting some of the fear in her chest. Her lips parted, but words refused to come out. For a moment, the world felt still — just the sound of leaves rustling and their racing hearts filling the silence. She looked up at him, her eyes glistening. “Xavier… why do I feel like I’ve known you forever?” He smiled faintly. “Because maybe, somewhere in another world, you did.” Their eyes locked — and though neither said it aloud, both felt it: something had begun between them that neither magic nor time could undo. But far away, in the dark, Stephen’s eyes glowed with vengeance. The rival had arrived… and he wasn’t planning to leave quietly.
