The Forbidden Presence

Xavier stood in the shadows, watching her with quiet intensity. The faintest smile tugged at his lips. She looked perfect. Beautiful, fragile, and completely unaware of the chaos her existence had caused in his world. Her skin glowed faintly under the afternoon light, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders. Every movement she made drew his gaze — graceful yet innocent, almost teasing him without knowing it. “She’s exactly my type,” he murmured, his voice a deep whisper that only the wind could carry. “Small, soft… delicate. Just like the one I always dreamed of.” That was why he had followed her everywhere — ignoring every warning, every law of his world. Because once Xavier wanted something, there was no stopping him. In his realm, Xavier was no ordinary being. He was the young master of House Velaris — a name whispered with both reverence and fear. The blood of emperors flowed in his veins. He was power and danger wrapped in perfection. Every servant knew better than to cross him. They’d seen what happened to those who tried. There was once a servant — bold, foolish — who touched Xavier’s personal belongings without permission. One moment, the boy was alive and apologizing; the next, Xavier’s hand snapped the servant’s wrist with such speed that the sound echoed through the marble hall like breaking glass. No one spoke of it again. They didn’t need to. From that day on, everyone understood: never touch what belongs to the young master. And now, that same possessive instinct had found something new to cling to. Her. Isabel. He didn’t even know when the obsession started — maybe from the first time he saw her in that small human town, laughing at something her friend said. The sound of her laughter had stirred something inside him that he hadn’t felt in centuries. He’d tried to ignore it, to pretend she was just another fleeting human curiosity. But every night, he found himself drawn to her — watching her sleep, listening to her breathe, memorizing her face. Even when he tried to stay away, her scent followed him like a spell he couldn’t break. Strawberries and something sweeter — something uniquely hers. “She’s mine,” he said softly to himself. “Even if she doesn’t know it yet.” His butler, Gabriel, had tried to warn him. ‘Young master, appearing in the human realm without reason is forbidden. The Emperor—’ But Xavier had cut him off with a glare. “I don’t care what my father forbids. She’s worth the risk.” Spoilt. Reckless. Arrogant. That was what everyone called him. But deep down, Xavier didn’t care what names they used — because nothing, not even the Emperor himself, could stop him when his heart desired something. He took a slow step forward, eyes locked on Isabel. She was still standing where he’d left her, confusion painted across her delicate face. The sight made his lips curl upward again. “Hey, pretty,” he said softly, his voice a mixture of charm and hunger. She turned to face him fully, her dark eyes meeting his brilliant blue ones. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The world seemed to blur — as though they were the only two beings that existed. Her eyes… God, her eyes. So dark, so full of innocence. Yet beneath that calmness, he could sense something buried — something familiar. A spark of recognition. A bond she didn’t yet understand. He wanted to touch her, to trace the outline of her lips, to see if her skin felt as soft as it looked. His fingers twitched with the urge, but he forced them still. He could hear her heartbeat — fast, uncertain. He could even feel it, pulsing faintly against the air that separated them. “She’s scared,” he thought, watching the small tremor in her hands. “But not enough to run.” That excited him more than he cared to admit. “Your eyes,” he murmured, his gaze trailing over her face. “They’re beautiful. Dark, but shining.” She blinked rapidly, unsure whether to feel flattered or terrified. “Who… who are you really?” she asked, voice trembling slightly. He smiled faintly, but didn’t answer. “You’ll find out soon enough.” For a heartbeat, the air between them thickened with tension — that dangerous kind of silence that carried a thousand unsaid words. His thoughts began to spiral, darker and wilder. He imagined her in his arms, her heartbeat against his chest, her breath catching as he whispered her name in the dark. No. He stopped himself, shutting down the vision before it could go further. He could feel the hunger in his chest, the possessive urge clawing to get out — and he hated losing control. “Not yet,” he muttered under his breath. “She’s not ready. And neither am I.” Then, something changed. A cold wave rippled through the air — one he hadn’t summoned. His smile vanished instantly. He stiffened, his senses heightening. A strange energy lingered close — one that didn’t belong here. Someone from his realm. “Impossible,” he hissed. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. The scent confirmed it — sharp, metallic, and unmistakable. Royal blood. That meant only one thing: someone from the Imperial family had crossed the veil into the human world. And that someone was hunting him. “No one is allowed here,” he muttered. “No one… except me.” He clenched his jaw, anger simmering beneath his calm expression. The Emperor had forbidden all royal blood from stepping foot in this realm unless summoned — but clearly, someone had disobeyed. Which meant trouble. He looked back at Isabel. She was still there, watching him with wide, questioning eyes, unaware of the danger surrounding them. He wanted to stay. To keep looking at her. To lose himself in her presence. But he knew better. If another royal had come here, then the clock had started ticking. He didn’t want her anywhere near that kind of danger. Still, the idea of leaving her — even for a moment — made something inside him ache. He took one last step closer, his voice lowering to a gentle whisper. “I’ll see you around, pretty.” Her breath hitched at the sound of it. Before she could reply, his body began to dissolve again — fragments of him fading into shimmering dust. In an instant, he was gone. No trace left, no proof he had ever been there. Only the faint scent of cold air and something that reminded her of storm clouds remained. Isabel stood frozen, her heart pounding in her chest. She stared at the spot he had been standing just seconds ago. Her mind was spinning. He had just vanished — right in front of her eyes. But instead of fear, a strange calm settled over her. For the first time, she didn’t feel terrified. Instead, she felt… connected. Drawn to him in a way that made no sense. “Who are you, really?” she whispered into the air, half hoping he could still hear her. The wind answered with a faint echo — soft, deep, and hauntingly familiar. Soon. Her breath caught. Had she imagined it? She didn’t know. But one thing she was certain of — whoever Xavier truly was, their story was only beginning. And somewhere far beyond the human realm, in a palace of dark crystal and endless night, a shadowed figure stood before a great mirror, watching the same scene unfold. A faint smirk played on his lips. “So, you broke the rule again, my son,” the Emperor said softly, his voice echoing through the halls. “And for a human girl, no less.” He turned from the mirror, his cloak whispering against the cold floor. “Let’s see how far this obsession of yours will go… before it destroys you both.”
