CHAPTER TEN: THE OATH OF SIXTEEN
> “To be a Balogun is not merely to fight — it is to remember, to endure, and to bind your soul to the very earth you protect.”
---
1. The Rising Fire
Thunder cracked across the dawn sky as golden clouds rolled over the sacred land of Ilé Ifè. Once a cradle of kingdoms and myths, the ancient city now stirred awake, breathing again after centuries of silence. At its heart stood the Temple of Trials — once the site of blood sacrifice, now the altar of rebirth.
Flames danced in a ring at the temple’s center — white, gold, and flickering like spirits.
There, Kemi and Chika knelt side by side.
Around them, the Thirteen Elders of the Balogun Order stood in a perfect circle. Their presence alone made the earth feel heavier. Each carried power older than kingdoms — some cloaked in mist, others radiating light or whispering with spirits only they could hear.
Balogun Kamalu, first among the elders and bearer of the Shade-Walker’s Mantle, stepped forward.
> “Tonight,” he said, his voice deep as stone, “we rise as Sixteen once more. The stars have returned. The fire remembers. The blood has chosen.”
John stood behind Kemi and Chika, watching with a storm of emotions. Pride. Worry. Hope. He was no longer alone in carrying the future.
Kamalu raised his hand — and the flames rose into twin columns before Chika and Kemi. Their colors shifted — gold for Kemi, silver-blue for Chika — and swept into their bodies like lightning drawn to the earth.
Kemi cried out — not in pain, but in release. Her back arched as flames poured into her chest, branding her with a symbol of radiant light. Her dark brown eyes turned gold.
Chika’s body shook as the storm overtook him — lightning raced along his arms, forming living tattoos of thunder sigils. His skin shimmered as blue-white light sparked off his breath.
The transformation ended in a heartbeat. When both stood, they no longer looked like themselves.
They looked like legends.

2. Kemi the Fireheart & Chika the Stormborn
Balogun Ayoka, her armor made of beast bones, stepped forward.
> “The girl walks with the Fire That Sees. I name her Kemi the Fireheart — she who burns not only enemies, but lies. Her fire unmasks illusions, speaks truth, and incinerates fear.”
Kamalu added, “And the boy is Chika the Stormborn — a warrior blessed by the sky itself. Lightning follows his command. His body is wind. His anger — thunder.”
Kemi, now glowing with radiant fire robes, turned to John and smiled.
> “Looks like I caught up.”
Chika spun a storm-forged dagger between his fingers, his grin as sharp as ever. “Let’s hunt something.”
The Sixteen were almost complete.
John looked around. For the first time, he noticed them — the remaining Thirteen Baloguns who had lived long enough to see another generation rise.
Kamalu raised his arms.
> “Let the world know our names.”

Kamalu looked to John, Kemi, and Chika.
> “And now, the final three… the future.”
---
4. The Broken Seal
Before the ceremony could end, Farida the Oracle fell to her knees.
Ash spilled from her mouth.
> “It’s too soon. Something ancient... it awakens.”
The temple shook.
Cracks split the altar beneath them.
Dark flame surged upward — corrupted fire, twisted by rage and grief.
From the pit, a voice echoed — human, yet monstrous.
> “Sixteen again… as it was before. But you forgot me. I, too, was once a Balogun…”
A malformed beast rose — man-shaped, but burned hollow from within. Fire leaked from its joints like blood. Its face wore a cracked mask of a long-dead Balogun.
> “I was Akorede. I was the Seventeenth — the one you betrayed.”
Kamalu shouted, “No — you broke the Code. You sacrificed innocents!”
> “I sacrificed weakness! And now… I reclaim my flame!”
The Corrupted Balogun exploded into motion.
Kemi shielded Chika.
John leapt, the Soulfire Blade burning brighter than ever.
The battle began.
---
5. The True Oath
But something was different.
This fight wasn’t about power — it was about memory.
Kamalu called, “Sixteen! Form the Circle!”
One by one, the Baloguns moved — forming a ring of flame, wind, mist, stone, shadow, and light.
Their weapons blazed. Their powers synced.
John understood.
This wasn’t just a fight.
It was the Oath Ritual. The moment they stood as one — bound by legacy, pain, and choice.
He rose above the center.
> “We are flame. We are storm. We are the chain that binds the darkness.”
Each Balogun spoke:
> “We are the Sixteen.”
Their powers surged — each element touching the next.
John dove with the Soulfire Blade — no longer just Obatunde’s legacy.
Now it was his.
He struck Akorede’s core.
The corrupted flame screamed.
Light consumed the monster.
When the ash cleared, only the mark remained — sixteen lines in a ring, burned into the ground.
---
6. The Dawn After
Silence.
Kemi walked to John, her gold eyes filled with quiet wonder.
Chika threw an arm over his shoulder. “That was insane.”
Kamalu stepped forward, his voice solemn.
> “The Oath is sealed. The Sixteen rise anew. But shadows move beyond our borders. And soon… beasts shall no longer wear only fangs.”
Farida turned her blind face to the east.
> “The Queen is stirring.”
John frowned. “Queen?”
Kamalu’s eyes narrowed.
> “There are beasts. And there is the one who made them.”
> “And she remembers us.”
