CHAPTER 22 — The Next Phase

848 Words
Midnight. Aurora Tech was still lit. “Miss Mahendra, we have a problem.” Evelyn didn’t look up. Data moved across her tablet, her expression steady. “Report.” “Three major investors froze support within two hours. Media coverage is turning negative.” A brief pause. “…Knight Group.” Evelyn lifted her gaze. No surprise. Just confirmation. A faint smile appeared. “Three hours,” she said quietly. “That’s how long it took him to escalate.” The room stayed silent. They all understood what this meant. Not competition. War. “Stabilize operations,” Evelyn said. “Freeze non-essential spending. Redirect supply chains. Notify legal. I want countermeasures before the next wave hits.” Her team moved immediately. No panic. No wasted motion. Everything precise. “Secure core servers,” she added. “Double encryption. No external access.” “Yes, Miss.” Within seconds, the room shifted into controlled urgency. Evelyn stayed where she was. Watching. Because this wasn’t unexpected. Across the city, Rafael Knight stood by the window, reading reports. “We’ve pressured Aurora Tech’s investors. Media narrative is shifting.” He didn’t respond immediately. Then— “Pull secondary investors.” His secretary hesitated. “Even long-term contracts?” “Break them.” “That will damage our credibility.” Rafael finally looked up. “Exactly.” Silence. “Continue. I want pressure everywhere.” “Yes, sir.” The secretary turned to leave. “Wait.” He paused. “…Monitor her.” “Her, sir?” “Evelyn Mahendra.” His tone lowered slightly. “She’s too quiet.” The door closed. Rafael remained still. Because he already knew— This wouldn’t be simple. Back at Aurora Tech, hours passed. The building emptied. Only one office remained lit. Evelyn’s. Screens filled the room with a dim glow. Numbers stabilized. Systems adjusted. Everything was moving exactly as planned. Until— A flicker. Her eyes narrowed. “…What was that?” Gone in less than a second. Too clean to be random. Her fingers moved, replaying system logs. There. A spike. Small. Almost invisible. “…Interesting.” Most wouldn’t notice. She did. “That’s not him.” Rafael’s moves were direct. Heavy. Meant to overwhelm. This— Was precise. Controlled. Almost deliberate. Her gaze sharpened slightly. Someone else was inside her system. Not attacking. Just… observing. A faint smile formed. Cold. Curious. “Who are you?” Far from the city, in a dark room— A boy sat cross-legged on his bed, laptop glowing in front of him. Ray’s fingers moved quickly across the keyboard. Firewalls opened, closed, reformed. He slipped through them like they weren’t there. “…Stronger than I thought,” he murmured. Aurora Tech’s system appeared on his screen. Vanished. Then reappeared. He tilted his head, studying it. “Mommy’s company…” A pause. “…not bad.” His fingers hovered for a moment. Then moved again. Another window opened. Knight Group. “…so this is him.” His eyes sharpened. Curious. Focused. Dangerous. “…Good.” He leaned back slightly. “Let’s see how this plays.” Back in Aurora Tech— The screen flickered again. Longer this time. Clear enough to confirm. Evelyn’s fingers stilled. There was no breach. No damage. Just presence. Someone was testing boundaries. Mapping her system. “A third player,” she said softly. Unknown. Hidden. Careful. And unlike Rafael— Not trying to win immediately. Her lips curved slightly. That made him more dangerous. Miles away— Ray paused. Then smiled. A single line appeared on his screen. Access: Granted. His eyes lit up. “Next time…” He tapped the keyboard once. “…I won’t stay quiet.” Back at Knight Group— Rafael reviewed the latest update. Aurora Tech wasn’t collapsing. It was stabilizing. Faster than projected. His jaw tightened. “She anticipated it.” Not just reacting. Preparing. Adapting. A slow smile formed. “If that’s how you want to play…” His gaze darkened. “Then we’ll see how long you last.” Back in her office— Evelyn closed the logs. Not because she was done. But because she had seen enough. This wasn’t just Rafael anymore. Something else had entered the game. Her fingers tapped lightly against the desk. Slow. Measured. Then— She picked up her phone. “Prepare a meeting,” she said. “With who?” her assistant asked. Evelyn’s gaze sharpened. “The one who thinks I didn’t notice.” Silence. Because whoever it was— Had already made one mistake. They touched her system. And didn’t disappear completely. Far away— Ray’s screen flickered. For the first time— Something pushed back. Not blocking. Not attacking. Just… Acknowledging. His smile widened. “…There you are.” Back in the city— Two players were already moving against each other. But now— A third had stepped in. Uninvited. Unseen. And no one knew yet— He wasn’t here to watch. He was here to take control. And next time— He wouldn’t just be testing the system. He would break it.
