CHAPTER 6 — Too Late

764 Words
The silence stretched between them, thick enough to feel. This time, Rafael didn’t look away. His gaze stayed on Evelyn, sharp and searching, as if he could uncover something hidden beneath her calm. “You’ve become confident,” he said at last. Evelyn leaned back slightly, composed. “I’ve always been. You just never paid attention.” The words landed cleanly. Rafael stilled, watching her more carefully now. Not her words—but her absence of reaction. No hesitation, no emotion. Nothing. “You could have told me,” he said, quieter. “Told you what?” “Who are you really?” A faint smile touched her lips. “Would you have listened?” Silence answered for him. Because they both knew— He wouldn’t have. Back then, she had never been important enough for him to look twice. Rafael exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening. “This changes things.” “Does it?” Her tone was light, but her gaze wasn’t. “Your identity. Your position. It affects this deal.” Evelyn leaned forward slightly. “But it didn’t affect how you treated me.” Her voice remained calm, almost gentle. That made it worse. For a brief moment, Rafael had no response. “You’re mixing personal matters with business,” he said finally. Even he knew it sounded weak. Evelyn held his gaze, then pushed the document back toward him. “This deal doesn’t benefit me.” Just like that, she shifted the conversation—cutting him out of it entirely. Rafael glanced at the file, then back at her. “What do you want?” For the first time, he wasn’t leading. He was asking. Evelyn let the silence sit before answering. “I want control.” “Over what?” “Everything related to Hayes Group in this partnership.” “That’s not a partnership,” he said. “That’s leverage.” Her lips curved slightly. “Now you understand.” Rafael leaned back, his expression darkening. “You’re asking me to give up authority.” “I’m asking you to recognize reality.” “And what reality is that?” Evelyn met his gaze without hesitation. “That you need this more than I do.” The truth settled heavily. Knight Group was stable—but no longer expanding. Hayes Group was rising. If they partnered, he gained. If they didn’t, she lost nothing. For the first time— Rafael felt real pressure. “You’ve changed more than I thought,” he said quietly. Evelyn didn’t respond. She didn’t need to. He leaned forward slightly, his voice lower. “Is this really just business?” Evelyn held his gaze. “It is now.” Something tightened in his chest. Unfamiliar. “You walked away too easily,” he said suddenly. The words slipped out. Evelyn paused for a fraction of a second, then leaned back again. “You signed the papers.” “That’s not what I meant.” His voice dropped further. “You didn’t hesitate.” There it was. Not anger. Something closer to regret. Evelyn looked at him then. Truly looked. And whatever she saw— It changed nothing. “You wanted a clean ending,” she said. “I gave you one.” Silence followed. This time, he had nothing to say. Because she was right. Rafael held her gaze, searching for something from before. Warmth. Attachment. Anything. There was nothing. The woman who once waited for him— Was gone. And he was the reason. “…Evelyn.” Her name sounded unfamiliar on his tongue. She stood, ending the meeting without needing to say it. “This discussion is over. Have your team revise the terms.” She picked up her bag. Then paused. For a brief second, she looked at him again. Clear. Sharp. Untouchable. “You’re late, Rafael.” The words were soft. But they landed harder than anything else. Because this time— He understood. She wasn’t talking about the deal. She turned and walked away. The door closed behind her. Rafael didn’t move. For a long moment, he just sat there, staring at the space she left behind. And then— The realization settled in. He hadn’t lost her today. He had lost her long ago. And now, she had returned— Stronger. Colder. Completely out of his reach. His hand tightened slowly against the table. Because for the first time— Rafael Knight understood something he had never allowed himself to feel before. This wasn’t a negotiation anymore. It was the beginning of a loss he couldn’t undo.
