Chapter Thirty: The Test of Fire

688 Words
The testing ground was a large circular clearing in the center of the valley, surrounded by stone pillars carved with ancient wolf symbols. The entire community had gathered to watch — hundreds of moon-touched standing in silence on the grassy slopes. Elder Mira stood at the edge of the circle with the council. “Today we test the Anomaly. Show us your control, Arian. Prove that the old blood has chosen wisely.” Zara squeezed my hand one last time before she and Max stepped back to join the crowd. Her golden eyes were full of worry. Max gave me a firm nod, his silver-gray eyes steady. I walked alone into the center of the circle. “Begin,” Elder Mira called. The first test was simple strength. Five strong wolves stepped forward and attacked me at once. I moved on instinct. The ancient power surged through me. I dodged, countered, and threw them one by one without seriously hurting any of them. The crowd murmured in approval. The second test was speed and agility. They released six shadow wolves — fast, dark creatures bred for training. I chased them down, moving faster than I ever had before. The glowing patterns on my skin brightened as I caught each one. But the final test was different. Elder Mira stepped forward holding a silver collar. “Now… resist the silver while using your full power.” My stomach tightened. Silver still burned. Even with the new strength, it was my greatest weakness. They locked the collar around my neck. Pain instantly flared across my skin. The ancient power inside me roared in response. The glowing patterns exploded with light. I dropped to one knee, fighting the urge to rip the collar off. “Control it!” Mira shouted. “Channel the power without losing yourself!” The pain grew worse. My vision turned red. The wolf inside me wanted to destroy everything. I fought it, breathing hard, claws digging into the dirt. Zara stepped forward from the crowd. “That’s enough! He’s proven himself!” A council member blocked her path. “He must finish the test.” I roared. The power burst out of me in a controlled wave. The silver collar cracked and fell to the ground in pieces. I stood up slowly, breathing heavily, the glowing patterns slowly dimming. The crowd erupted in a mix of cheers and fearful whispers. Elder Mira studied me carefully. “You passed. But your power is volatile. It grows too fast. If you cannot master it, you may become a danger to everyone here.” As the crowd began to disperse, a tall man with cold blue eyes approached me. His name was Viktor — one of the senior warriors. “Impressive display,” he said, but his tone was sharp. “Many of us lost family because of uncontrolled power like yours. The Silver Order will come for you. When they do, how many of us will die protecting the great Anomaly?” Zara appeared at my side. “He didn’t ask for this power.” Viktor smiled coldly. “None of us asked for the curse. Yet here we are.” He looked straight at me. “Be careful, boy. Not everyone here is happy you arrived.” Later that night, the three of us sat outside our cabin. Max sharpened his claws on a stone. “This place has tension. I don’t trust Viktor.” Zara leaned against me. “The ancient voice was right. There’s a price coming. I can feel it.” I stared at the peaceful valley lights. “I won’t let this power destroy what we have. Whatever the old blood wants, it won’t take either of you from me.” But as we sat together under the quiet moon, a distant howl echoed from beyond the Veil — long, unnatural, and full of hunger. The Silver Order had found the barrier. And something told me the haven’s peace was about to be shattered. The real test wasn’t the one in the circle. It was the one coming tomorrow. --- To be continued…
