We walked deeper into the Dead Zone without stopping.
The forest felt alive now. Trees whispered. Shadows moved even when there was no wind. My body still hummed with the new power from the stone circle. The glowing patterns on my skin had faded, but I could feel them just beneath the surface, waiting.
Zara stayed close to my side. Every few minutes she would glance at me, her golden eyes full of questions and something warmer. Max walked a few steps ahead, tense and alert.
“You’re different now,” Zara said quietly. “I can feel it in the air around you.”
“I feel it too,” I replied. “Like there’s a second heartbeat inside me. Stronger. Older.”
Max looked back. “That power saved us back there, but it also lit you up like a beacon. Everything in this forest knows exactly where we are.”
We kept moving. The trees grew even taller and older. Some had deep gashes in their trunks, like massive claws had torn through them years ago.
After another hour, we found a small cave hidden behind thick vines. The entrance was narrow, but inside it opened into a dry space big enough for the three of us.
“We rest here for a few hours,” Max said. “We all need it.”
Zara built a small fire while I sat against the cave wall. The flames danced across the stone, casting moving shadows. My shoulder had finally stopped bleeding, but the silver wound still burned deep.
Zara sat beside me and gently touched the glowing lines on my arm. Her fingers were warm.
“Does it hurt?” she asked.
“Not anymore,” I said. “It feels more like… it belongs there now.”
Max stayed near the entrance, watching the forest. “You saw memories in that circle. Tell us what you saw.”
I closed my eyes for a moment. “Packs living free. Not hiding. Not cursed. There were cities made for our kind. And then… war. Humans with silver weapons. Something was taken from us. Our true strength. Our real home.”
Zara’s hand tightened on my arm. “And now it’s coming back through you.”
A long silence filled the cave.
Max finally spoke. “If that’s true, the Silver Order will burn the whole world to stop you.”
I looked at both of them. “I don’t want to be their weapon. Or their experiment. I just want… us. Safe.”
Zara leaned her head against my shoulder. For the first time, I put my arm around her. The wolf inside me settled peacefully, content with her closeness.
Max watched us for a moment, then gave a small nod. “Get some sleep. I’ll take first watch.”
I don’t know how long I slept.
When I woke up, the fire had burned low. Zara was curled against my side. Max was still at the entrance, but his body was tense.
Then I felt it.
The cave grew colder. The air became thick, hard to breathe.
Max stood up slowly. “Something’s here.”
Zara woke instantly, eyes glowing.
I rose to my feet. The glowing patterns on my skin lit up again on their own.
Outside the cave, standing between the trees, was a single figure.
Taller than any of us. Cloaked in shadow. Its eyes were pure silver, just like the being in the stone circle. But this one felt heavier. Older. Hungrier.
It didn’t speak out loud. The words appeared directly in our minds.
**“The Anomaly has awakened. Now the balance breaks.”**
Max growled. “What do you want?”
The figure tilted its head.
**“Not what I want. What the forest wants. What the old blood demands.”**
It raised one long, shadowy hand and pointed straight at me.
**“Come with me, child of the first moon… or watch your pack die slowly in this place.”**
The ground beneath us began to tremble. Dark shapes moved in the trees all around the cave.
Zara grabbed my hand. Max’s claws extended.
The ancient thing waited.
And for the first time, I felt truly afraid of what I was becoming.
