Chapter 8: The Fox Realm

1146 Words
The first thing Hye Young felt was cold. Not the cold of winter—but something deeper, ancient, crawling under her skin like frost. When she opened her eyes, she was no longer in the Wonton mansion. The world around her shimmered in hues of crimson and gold—an ethereal forest where every tree pulsed faintly with light. The sky above was endless twilight, painted with blood-red clouds and silver stars. The Fox Realm. She stood in the middle of an ancient courtyard made of obsidian stone, surrounded by floating lanterns that whispered with trapped souls. At the far end sat a throne carved from black jade. And upon it… her mother. The Gumiho Queen. “You’re awake, my daughter,” the Queen said, her voice soft and sharp all at once. “The Realm has missed its true heir.” Hye Young’s chest ached. “Why… why did you bring me here?” The Queen’s tails curled lazily behind her, shimmering like ribbons of living flame. “Because you’ve forgotten who you are. You belong to us. Not to the humans. Not to that boy.” Her voice darkened. “And certainly not to fate.” Hye Young clenched her fists. “He’s not just some boy. Seo Jun saved me—he’s the reason I’m still alive!” The Queen’s expression twisted. “Saved you? He’s the reason you’re cursed!” The air rippled as the Queen rose from her throne, eyes blazing with ancient power. “A thousand years ago, his soul destroyed our kind. And now, history repeats. You think you love him—but it’s nothing but the curse reawakening through your bloodline.” “You’re lying.” “Am I?” The Queen raised her hand. A mist formed—a vision of the past. Hye Young saw it: a battlefield beneath a blood moon, foxfire and divine light colliding. A man who looked like Seo Jun raising a golden sword, and a woman who looked like her—pierced by it. She gasped, her knees weakening. “He killed her,” the Queen whispered. “Your past self. The Divine Warrior loved the Fox Princess—and then ended her life to seal our realm.” Hye Young’s heart shattered. “No… Seo Jun isn’t him. He’s not like that.” The Queen smiled sadly. “Perhaps. But destiny always demands its due.” ✦ Meanwhile, in the Human Realm Seo Jun stood before the ancient temple of Mount Haneul, his body wrapped in gold-tinted bandages, his eyes hollow with exhaustion. Before him, the Celestial Guardian Haneul appeared once more, his presence glowing faintly against the stormy sky. “The bond between you and the fox maiden grows thin,” Haneul said. “If you do not reach her soon, the Queen will consume her completely.” Seo Jun tightened his grip on the Divine Blade, now engraved with new runes—the mark of the Soul Link. “Then tell me how to find her.” “The Fox Realm cannot be entered by mortals,” Haneul warned. “You must open the Spirit Gate… but it demands sacrifice.” “What kind of sacrifice?” Seo Jun asked, though part of him already knew. Haneul’s expression was solemn. “Your life force. Every step you take within that realm will drain you. When you find her, you must bring her back before your light fades completely.” Seo Jun didn’t hesitate. “Then I’ll burn every last drop if I have to.” Haneul bowed slightly. “Very well. May the heavens guide you, Divine Heir.” With a roar of thunder, the Spirit Gate appeared—a swirling rift of gold and red flame. Seo Jun stepped through without looking back. ✦ Back in the Fox Realm The Queen watched as her daughter’s resolve began to crumble. “You see now,” she said softly, “why you can never be with him. You’re fated to destroy each other. It is better you embrace your power and rule beside me.” Hye Young looked down, silent. Then she raised her eyes—and they burned with fierce defiance. “Maybe that was my past life,” she said, her voice steady. “But this time, I choose my own fate.” The Queen’s tails flared. “Foolish child—” Before she could finish, the sky above them split open. Golden light poured through the c***k, blinding and divine. The ground trembled as the Spirit Gate opened in the heart of the Fox Realm. Through it stepped Seo Jun, eyes glowing, the Divine Blade in hand. “Hye Young!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the realm. She turned, tears filling her eyes. “You came…” The Queen’s expression darkened to rage. “You dare set foot in my world, human?” Seo Jun raised his sword, divine fire swirling around him. “I’m not leaving without her.” The Queen’s laughter shook the sky. “Then you will die here, like your soul did a thousand years ago!” Her tails exploded into crimson flame, clashing against Seo Jun’s golden aura. The shockwave split the ground and sent storms raging across the realm. Hye Young screamed, her foxfire bursting forth in wild arcs. She tried to run to him, but the curse inside her ignited—chains of dark energy wrapping around her wrists and ankles, pulling her back toward her mother’s throne. “No—Mother, stop!” she cried. “You are my blood,” the Queen said coldly. “And you will obey me!” Seo Jun saw her being dragged away and charged forward, his blade cutting through waves of dark fire. Each strike burned through his energy, but he didn’t care. Every heartbeat, every wound, every drop of light in his body was for her. At last, their hands reached—just barely brushing fingertips through the storm. In that touch, the bond reignited. Their souls pulsed as one. A burst of light erupted, shattering the Queen’s chains. “Hye Young!” Seo Jun shouted. “Come with me!” Tears streaked down her face as she looked between him and her mother. “If I leave… I’ll never be able to come back.” “Then let’s make this world our last battlefield,” he said. And she took his hand. The Queen’s scream shook the heavens as the Divine Blade erupted in golden fire. The Spirit Gate pulsed one last time, beginning to collapse. Seo Jun pulled Hye Young into his arms as the realm burned around them. “Hold on,” he whispered. “We’re going home.” But as the light swallowed them both, the Queen whispered into the flames: “You cannot escape destiny, my child. The curse has only begun.”
