Chapter 4: The Divine Mark

697 Words
The storm refused to die that night. Thunder rolled over the mansion like an angry god, and moonlight cut through the shattered windows, painting the floor in silver and blood. Hye Young stood frozen, her heartbeat echoing in her ears as the faint golden runes continued to burn along Seo Jun’s wrist. The light pulsed in rhythm with her foxfire, as if their powers—divine and cursed—recognized each other. Her mother, the Gumiho Queen, hissed softly, her eyes flashing with both fury and awe. “The Divine Seal hasn’t appeared in a thousand years,” she murmured. “And yet, fate dares to mock me again.” Seo Jun clenched his jaw. “I don’t know what this is,” he said, his voice rough, “but you’re not hurting her.” The Queen’s laugh was cold and cruel. “You poor mortal. You think you can protect her? You carry the blood of the one who killed my firstborn. That mark is your curse… and your death.” Before he could react, her tails whipped forward—each one glowing with dark crimson fire. Hye Young’s instincts flared; her body moved before her mind could. She summoned her foxfire, but this time it didn’t flicker weakly—it roared to life, forming a blazing shield around her and Seo Jun. Sparks flew as her mother’s attack clashed with her flame. The impact sent shockwaves through the mansion. The walls cracked, chandeliers shattered, and the ground split beneath them. “You dare defy me, child?” the Queen screamed. “You stopped being my mother the day you called me a curse!” Hye Young cried, her golden eyes blazing. Her mother’s expression twisted from fury to something colder—sadness? Regret? But it was gone in an instant. “Then so be it. You will die as a traitor to your blood.” With a final wave of her tails, the Queen vanished into smoke, leaving behind a suffocating silence. The storm outside began to calm. Only the faint hum of divine energy lingered in the air. Hye Young collapsed to her knees, trembling. The foxfire faded from her hands, leaving only smoke. Seo Jun knelt beside her. His hand hovered above her shoulder, unsure whether to touch her or not. “You’re hurt,” he said quietly. She shook her head. “Not as much as I should be.” He frowned. “What did she mean? The Divine Seal… and her calling you—” “Cursed?” she finished, her lips twisting in a sad smile. “Because that’s what I am.” She looked at the mark on his wrist—still glowing faintly. “That symbol… it’s the Seal of Light. It belongs to the divine warrior who once sealed away the Gumiho Queen’s power. You’re his reincarnation.” Seo Jun blinked, his mind spinning. “Reincarnation? That’s insane.” She gave a bitter laugh. “So is my life.” There was silence between them for a long time—only the sound of rain against broken glass. Then she whispered: “Your soul was destined to destroy mine.” He looked at her, really looked at her—the pain, the fear, the strength she carried alone. “Then I’ll change destiny,” he said softly. “I’ll protect you, no matter what fate says.” Her eyes widened. For a heartbeat, the curse in her chest loosened. The mark on his wrist dimmed to a gentle glow. Outside, the storm broke. And for the first time in years, Hye Young felt something other than fear. She felt hope. Far away, in the ruins of an ancient shrine, the Shadow Priest knelt before the Gumiho Queen’s spirit flame. “So it begins,” he whispered. “The fox bride and the divine heir are awakening.” The Queen’s voice drifted like smoke. “Then prepare the ritual. If my daughter will not return willingly… she will return in chains.” That night, two destinies began to intertwine under the same blood-red moon—one divine, one cursed, and both bound by love that defied the heavens.
