Light and shadow collided with a roar that shook the mountain.
For an instant, Lila saw nothing but white — pure, searing brilliance flooding her vision. Then sound rushed back: steel clashing, wolves snarling, the echo of her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.
The shadow-wolves moved like living smoke. Every time Damon’s blade struck, they re-formed, darkness knitting itself whole again.
“They’re bound to the moonlight,” he shouted. “They can’t die until the spell breaks!”
Lila closed her eyes, forcing her breath steady. She reached for the pulse of her mark. Gold light shimmered through her veins, answering the rhythm of Damon’s. Two souls, one fate. The words of the ancient vow filled her mind.
“Then we break the spell together,” she said.
The Bond Awakened
She raised her hand. The mark flared, and a ripple of golden energy burst outward. The nearest shadow-wolves froze mid-leap, their forms trembling. Damon lunged, driving his sword through the nearest one; this time, it shattered into sparks.
“It worked!” he called.
But more shadows poured from the cracks above — a hundred shapes descending like a storm.
Lila pressed her palms to the ground, whispering words she didn’t understand yet somehow remembered: “Lumen sanguis vincula fracta.” The mark on her wrist blazed brighter. Circles of light spun beneath her hands, racing outward in rings that dissolved the darkness.
The Shade Pack leader snarled. “You meddle with power beyond you, girl!”
“Maybe,” she said, lifting her gaze, “but it was meant for me.”
The Leader Unmasked
The cloaked figure stepped forward. Shadows peeled from his body, revealing a man with silver-streaked hair and eyes like molten amber. Around his neck hung a pendant bearing the sigil of the Alpha King.
“I was once bound too,” he said bitterly. “Until Rowan freed me — and taught me that fate is a lie.”
Damon’s jaw tightened. “He enslaved you.”
“He showed me choice.”
The man’s eyes flicked to Lila. “Give me the girl. The King will spare your pack.”
Damon’s laugh was quiet, dangerous. “You’ll have to rip her from my soul first.”
“So be it.”
The man raised his hands. Chains of moonlight erupted from the floor, whipping through the air. One coiled around Damon’s arm, searing his skin; another lashed toward Lila. She dodged, rolled, and slammed her palm against the rune-covered ground. Sparks exploded. The chains snapped apart, melting into mist.
Damon tore free, eyes blazing gold. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he told the Shade leader. “Now she’s angry.”
Moonfire
Together, they moved as one. Damon’s strikes flowed like wind; Lila’s light followed every swing, wrapping his blade in molten gold. Where his steel met her power, the air itself ignited — moonfire, ancient and unstoppable.
Each burst scattered the shadow-wolves. The cavern trembled, stalactites raining shards of crystal.
The Shade leader stumbled back, shielding his face. “What are you?” he gasped.
“The Bound,” Damon growled, voice layered with the echo of his wolf. “The prophecy you tried to erase.”
Lila stepped beside him, her mark now a full circle of burning gold. “Tell your King we’re coming.”
With a final strike, they shattered the last chain binding the cavern. The walls groaned; the ceiling cracked. A column of moonlight erupted upward, blasting open the mountain top.
When the light faded, the Shade Pack was gone — only silence and drifting ash remained.
After the Storm
They stood at the edge of the new-made crater, the night sky wide above them. Snow drifted down in glowing flakes. Damon turned to her, his expression torn between awe and worry.
“You could have died using that power.”
“So could you.”
He smiled, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “We’re linked now. When you call the moonfire, it burns through me too.”
She blinked. “You feel it?”
“Every spark.” He touched his chest lightly. “It’s beautiful — and terrifying.”
For a long moment neither spoke. Then she reached for his hand, lacing her fingers through his.
“Then we learn to wield it together.”
He squeezed her hand once. “Together.”
Whispers of the King
Before dawn, the pack regrouped. Most were unhurt; a few bore shallow cuts that glimmered faintly with silver residue. Lila moved from one to another, healing what she could with the energy that still shimmered in her veins.
When she finished, Damon stood watching the horizon. “He knows we survived,” he said. “Rowan will strike harder next time.”
“What does he want from us, really?” Lila asked.
“The mark,” Damon answered. “He thinks if he kills one of the Bound, the prophecy ends — that the wolves stay chained to his rule forever.”
“And if the prophecy is true?”
“Then we’re the key to breaking every chain in his empire.”
She looked up at the mountains that loomed beyond the dawn. “Then we climb.”
The Omen
They began their ascent. Each step brought thinner air, sharper wind, and stranger signs: frozen trees split by lightning, claw marks etched deep into stone. By midday, mist coiled thick around them.
Lila paused. “Do you hear that?”
A low hum pulsed through the air — not sound, but vibration, like the heartbeat of the mountain itself. Damon frowned. “Magic. Old and wild.”
Ahead, the mist parted, revealing a narrow bridge of stone spanning a bottomless chasm. On the other side stood two enormous wolf statues, carved from obsidian, eyes filled with pale fire.
Lila shivered. “It feels like they’re watching.”
“They are,” Damon said. “This is the Gate of Kings. Only those of royal blood or divine bond can cross.”
“Which are we?”
He smiled faintly. “We’re about to find out.”
Crossing the Gate
They stepped onto the bridge together. Instantly, the statues’ eyes flared brighter. Wind whipped around them, carrying whispers.
Unworthy… unbound… untrue…
The voices clawed at Lila’s mind, showing flashes of doubt — her father’s disappointment, her own fear, Damon falling in battle.
“No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “You’re not real.”
The whispers grew louder. Damon’s hand found hers, steady and firm. “Listen to me. The bond isn’t a curse. It’s us.”
She clung to his voice. The mark between them pulsed once, twice — and the whispers broke like glass. Light flooded the bridge, and the statues bowed their massive heads, stone wings spreading wide.
The path cleared.
They stepped onto the far side. Behind them, the bridge crumbled into dust, sealing the way back.
The Fortress of Chains
Beyond the gate lay the fortress: towers carved into the rock face, banners of silver and black fluttering in the cold wind. Guards patrolled the walls — wolves in human form, their armor glinting with moonlight.
Damon crouched behind a boulder, studying the entrance. “Once we’re inside, there’s no turning back.”
“I’m not turning back,” Lila said.
He looked at her for a long moment, then nodded. “Then we end it. Tonight.”
Cliff-hanger Ending
They waited until nightfall. The moon rose full again, staining the snow in silver. From their hiding place, Lila could see the great hall through the open gate — and upon its throne, a figure clad in dark armor, crown gleaming like frost.
Rowan Vale. The Alpha King.
He rose as if he’d sensed them. His voice rolled through the mountain like thunder.
“Come, Bound Ones,” he said. “Let destiny meet its master.”
Damon drew his blade. Lila’s mark blazed in answer.
Together, they stepped into the fortress of chains.
