Pacing back and forth in the waiting room, I tried to calm my nerves. They had Granny back there, doing blood work and tests of all kinds, and we hadn't seen her at all. We'd driven behind the ambulance on the way up here, me, and the boys. We were waiting on Ashley to make it here, his drive longer than all of ours. I had the boys camped out in the chairs along the wall, their iPads in their hands so they were entertained long enough for me to be the adult. I had left Jessica in her heap of a mess in the kitchen, her words still swirling through my mind. I hoped she was able to get to bed, and didn't do anything stupid while we were gone that would end up hurting her.
