chapter 3 part 1

The clock on the wall ticked past 9:47 PM. Still, Elena didn’t move. The office was nearly empty now—lights dimmed, footsteps gone, the usual noise of ambition replaced by a quiet that felt… too still. But her mind wasn’t still. Not even close. Her eyes moved across the documents again, slower this time. Not just reading—studying patterns, tracing connections, pulling threads. And every thread… Led somewhere it shouldn’t. She leaned forward, elbows on the desk, fingers pressing lightly against her lips. “This doesn’t make sense…” she murmured. Because it didn’t. If the documents were true, Damien was deeply involved. But if they were accurate— He shouldn’t have warned her. He shouldn’t have come to her at all. Unless… Her eyes narrowed slightly. Unless he wasn’t protecting himself. Unless he was trying to expose something. Or someone. A sharp knock echoed through the quiet office. Elena’s head snapped up. Her body reacted instantly—alert, controlled. “Who is it?” “Security, ma’am,” a voice answered from the other side. She exhaled softly. “Come in.” The door opened, revealing one of the night guards. “We’re locking up soon. Just wanted to confirm you’re the last one on this floor.” Elena gave a small nod. “I’ll be leaving shortly.” “Alright, ma’am.” The door closed again. Silence returned. But this time, it didn’t feel empty. It felt watched. Elena sat still for a moment longer, listening. Nothing. Just her breathing. Still… Something didn’t sit right. Slowly, she stood, walking toward the glass wall of her office. The city stretched out before her—alive, glowing, endless. From up here, everything looked simple. Small. Contained. But she knew better. This city was built on secrets. And right now… She was digging into one that didn’t want to be found. Her reflection stared back at her in the glass. Calm. Composed. But her eyes… Her eyes were different tonight. Sharper. Darker. Curious. A soft buzz broke the silence. Her phone. She turned, walking back to the desk, picking it up. Unknown number. For a second, she considered ignoring it. Then— She answered. “Elena.” A pause. Then a voice. Low. Familiar. “You’re still at the office.” Her grip tightened slightly. “Damien.” Not a question. A statement. “I thought you said proper channels,” she added coolly. “I did,” he replied. “But you don’t strike me as someone who waits.” Her eyes flicked to the scattered files on her desk. “You’re watching me?” A quiet chuckle on the other end. “I don’t need to.” That didn’t reassure her. “What do you want?” she asked. Silence. Then— “Leave.” The word came out sharper this time. Different from before. Not teasing. Not playful. Serious. Elena frowned. “Excuse me?” “Leave the office,” he repeated. “Now.” Her body tensed instantly. “Why?” Another pause. Longer this time. Then— “Because if you stay…” His voice dropped lower. “You won’t be the only one reading that file tonight.” A chill slid down her spine. Her gaze shifted slowly toward the door. Then to the glass wall. Then back to the papers. “What aren’t you telling me?” she asked quietly. “Not everything needs to be said,” he replied. “That’s not how this works,” she snapped. “If you know something—” “Elena.” Her name cut through her words. Firm. Urgent. “Leave.” Silence followed. Heavy. Pressing. For a moment, she hesitated. And that alone irritated her. She didn’t hesitate. Ever. But this… This felt different. Like standing on the edge of something she couldn’t see. Her eyes moved around the office again. The door. The hallway beyond it. The shadows that felt just a little too still. Then— A sound. Faint. Outside. Not footsteps. Not voices. Something else. Subtle. Wrong. Her heart rate spiked. “Damien…” she said slowly. “I know,” he replied immediately. Which meant— He heard it too. Or worse… He expected it. Elena moved quickly now, gathering the most important documents, slipping them into her bag with controlled urgency. “What’s going on?” she demanded. “You went digging,” he said. “Faster than I thought you would.” “That’s not an answer.” “No,” he agreed. “But it’s the reason.” Another sound. Closer this time. Just outside her door. Elena froze. Her breath slowed. Her mind sharpened. “Back exit,” Damien said quietly. “Is there one?” “Yes.” “Take it.” “And leave everything?” “Take what matters,” he replied. “The rest isn’t worth your life.” The words hit hard. Too real. Too serious. Elena zipped her bag, her jaw tightening. “This isn’t over,” she said. A pause. Then— “I know.” She moved toward the back of the office, every step controlled, silent. Her hand reached the hidden exit door. Another noise behind her. This time— The handle of her main office door shifted slightly. Someone was there. Trying to get in. Elena didn’t wait. She opened the back door— And slipped out into the dark hallway beyond. The door closed softly behind her. And just like that— The game changed.
