chapter 2 part 2

Sleep didn’t come easy. Elena lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, the faint glow of the city filtering through her curtains. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him—his smirk, the intensity in his gaze, the way his voice had dropped when he spoke like he already knew her. It was irritating. Unsettling. And worse… addictive. She turned onto her side, exhaling sharply. This was exactly why she avoided men like Damien. Not because she couldn’t handle them—but because they had a way of slipping past logic, past control, straight into places she kept locked down. Her phone lit up again. She ignored it. Let it buzz. Let it stop. Silence returned. Good. She closed her eyes again, forcing herself to breathe, to focus, to let the exhaustion of the night finally pull her under. Eventually… it did. Morning came too quickly. Sunlight spilled across her room, harsh and unforgiving, dragging her out of sleep. Elena groaned softly, rolling onto her back as reality settled in. Work. Routine. Control. Exactly what she needed. She sat up, running a hand through her hair, pushing away the remnants of last night. Whatever that was—it stayed there. It didn’t follow her into her world. By the time she stepped into her office, she was composed again. Sharp. Focused. Untouchable. The firm buzzed with its usual energy—phones ringing, heels clicking, quiet conversations layered with urgency. This was her domain. Here, everything made sense. “Elena.” She turned to see her mentor, Mr. Alade, approaching with a file in hand. His expression was serious, more than usual. “I need you on a case,” he said, handing it to her. “High profile. Sensitive.” Elena took the file without hesitation. “What kind of sensitive?” “The kind where mistakes don’t exist,” he replied. “And neither does mercy.” Her lips curved slightly. “Then it sounds like my kind of case.” He studied her for a moment, as if weighing something, then nodded. “Be careful who you trust on this one.” That caught her attention. “When am I not?” she said lightly. But as she walked into her office, closing the door behind her, something in his tone lingered. She dropped her bag, setting the file on her desk. For a moment, she just stood there, staring at it. Then she opened it. Her eyes scanned the first page. Then the second. And froze. A name stared back at her. Damien. Her heartbeat slammed against her ribs. No. That had to be a coincidence. Her fingers tightened slightly as she flipped through the pages faster now, scanning, confirming— There it was again. And again. Not just mentioned. Central. Important. Involved. Elena leaned back slowly, the air in the room suddenly feeling too thin. This wasn’t coincidence. This was collision. The night. The messages. The tension. And now this. A slow, dangerous realization settled in her chest. The game hadn’t just followed her into the daylight— It had embedded itself into her life. And this time… Walking away wouldn’t be that simple.
