It wasn’t until midday that we all finally untangled from each other where we’d dozed off by the fireplace. So sated, so full of love, brownies and wine, we’d collapsed out of sheer exhaustion and woken up with Hero nestled in among us.
Freddie cooked a breakfast that was just as amazing as his brownies had been, and by the time they announced that they needed to go home to finish unpacking, I still wasn’t ready to let them go.
A part of me feared that if I let them walk out the door, I might never see them again. Perhaps I had dreamed the whole thing and I’d wake up with the imprint of laptop keys on my cheek and drool down my chin.
Yet when I shut the door behind them the click didn’t jolt me awake. I already felt more awake and alive than I ever had.
