CHAPTER SIXTEEN: WHAT WAS HIDDEN “Don't open it.” Daniel's voice echoed through the vault. Maya turned slowly. Daniel stood at the entrance, but he wasn't alone. Two men stood behind him. Alexander immediately stepped in front of Maya. “You're not taking her.” Daniel smiled. “Still playing the protector?” Alexander's jaw tightened. “Always.” Daniel looked at Michael. “You disappointed me.” Michael stepped forward. “I won't help you hurt her.” Daniel's smile disappeared. “You already did.” Maya looked between them. “What is inside this box?” Daniel's expression changed. “Something your father should have destroyed.” “Then I'm opening it.” She reached for the box. Daniel moved forward. “Don't.” Maya opened it. Inside was a small envelope, an old flash drive, and a handwritten document. She picked up the document. Her father's handwriting. Maya, if you've reached this room, then everything has already begun. Her heart tightened. She continued reading. There is one truth I never told you because knowing it would have made you a target. Maya looked at Alexander. He nodded. “Keep reading.” She did. The foundation was never created simply to protect our families. It was created to expose powerful people who believed money made them untouchable. Maya's eyes widened. The foundation had been collecting evidence for decades. Evidence of corruption. Financial crimes. Illegal dealings. And Blackwood had wanted those records destroyed. Maya looked at Daniel. “You wanted the foundation because of what's inside it.” Daniel said nothing. Her father had been right. The foundation wasn't just valuable. It was dangerous. Maya picked up the flash drive. “What is this?” Daniel finally spoke. “Your father's confession.” “My father's?” “Yes.” “About what?” Daniel's face became cold. “About the night he died.” Maya froze. “What do you know about my father's death?” Daniel smiled. “More than you do.” Alexander stepped forward. “Tell us.” “No.” Maya held up the flash drive. “Then I'll find out myself.” Daniel's eyes narrowed. “You don't understand what you're opening.” “Then explain it.” “You'll regret it.” “I've regretted trusting people my entire life.” Maya turned toward the vault's computer. She inserted the flash drive. The screen flickered. A video appeared. Her father sat behind a desk. He looked tired. Older than Maya remembered. He stared directly at the camera. “If Maya is watching this, then I failed to protect her.” Maya's eyes filled with tears. Her father's voice continued. “I'm sorry.” She covered her mouth. Alexander stood beside her. “I never wanted you to know about the foundation. I wanted you to have an ordinary life.” Her father paused. “But ordinary was never possible.” The video changed. Several documents appeared. Maya saw names. Bank accounts. Dates. Payments. One name appeared repeatedly. Daniel Hayes. Then another. Michael Hayes. Maya looked at Michael. “You both worked together.” Michael lowered his head. “I did.” Alexander stared at his uncle. “You betrayed my father.” Michael nodded. “Yes.” The video continued. Maya's father spoke again. “Daniel and Michael believed they were entitled to the foundation. They planned to remove me.” Maya's heart raced. “But I discovered their plan.” The screen changed. A security recording appeared. Maya watched as Daniel and Michael entered an office. They were arguing. Then her father appeared. The recording stopped. Maya looked at Daniel. “What happened next?” Daniel remained silent. Michael answered. “He confronted us.” “And?” “We argued.” “Did you kill him?” Michael looked horrified. “No.” Daniel finally spoke. “Your father wasn't killed by either of us.” Maya stared. “Then who?” Daniel looked at her. “Your mother.” Maya froze. Elena. “No.” Daniel nodded. “She was there.” Maya turned toward Elena. “You said you weren't.” Elena began crying. “I didn't kill him.” “But you were there.” “Yes.” “What happened?” Elena stepped forward. “Your father was already injured when I arrived.” “How?” “I don't know.” Maya looked at Daniel. “Who hurt him?” Daniel smiled. “You're asking the wrong question.” “What question should I ask?” “Who ordered it?” Silence. Alexander looked at him. “Who?” Daniel's expression became unreadable. “Someone neither of you has considered.” Maya's stomach tightened. “Who?” Daniel looked directly at Alexander. “Your father.” Alexander stared. “What?” “Your father ordered the attack.” “No.” “He wanted to destroy the evidence before it could expose him.” Maya shook her head. “You're lying.” Daniel smiled. “Then watch the rest.” The video continued. Maya's father appeared again. His voice was quieter. “If I don't survive, Maya must never trust the person who claims to be her protector.” Alexander froze. Maya looked at him. Her father's words continued. “The promise was created because I knew the Hayes family would eventually come for the foundation.” Maya's heart sank. Alexander shook his head. “My father didn't know about the promise.” “Apparently he did,” Daniel said. Maya stared at the screen. Then her father's final words appeared. Maya, if Alexander is beside you when you discover this, ask him one question. The video paused. Maya looked at Alexander. “What question?” The screen displayed: What did your father tell you before he died? Alexander went completely still. Maya stared at him. “You know something.” “I…” “You know something.” Alexander looked away. Maya stepped closer. “Tell me.” He closed his eyes. “My father told me never to trust the foundation.” Maya's heart dropped. “What else?” “He told me to protect you.” “Why?” “I don't know.” “That's not true.” Alexander looked at her. “My father told me that if the foundation ever opened, I had to keep you away from it.” Maya stared. “Then why did you bring me here?” “Because I didn't know.” “You didn't know what?” “That this was the foundation.” Daniel laughed quietly. Maya turned toward him. “You knew.” “Yes.” “You knew everything.” “I knew enough.” “Then why tell me?” “Because I want you to understand.” “Understand what?” “That everyone around you has been lying.” Maya looked at Alexander. For the first time, she didn't know what to believe. Alexander reached for her hand. She stepped back. His face fell. “Maya…” “I need a minute.” She turned away. Then she noticed something on the floor. A photograph. She picked it up. It showed her father. Standing beside a woman. Maya recognized her. “That's Isabella.” Elena looked at the photograph. Her expression changed. “No.” Maya turned it over. A date was written on the back. The date was from two years after Isabella's supposed birth. Maya's heart raced. “That's impossible.” Daniel smiled. “Now you're getting close.” Maya looked at him. “What does this mean?” “It means Isabella wasn't born into the Blackwood family.” “Then who is she?” Daniel said nothing. Maya looked at Elena. “Who is Isabella?” Elena's face went pale. “She is your sister.” Silence. Maya couldn't breathe. “My sister?” Elena nodded. “She was born before you.” “But you said I was your only child.” “I was afraid.” “Afraid of what?” “That Daniel would use both of you.” Maya looked toward Daniel. “So Isabella is a Bennett?” “Yes.” Daniel smiled. “And that changes everything.” Maya's mind raced. Isabella had spent years attacking her. But if Isabella was her sister, why? “Why did she hate me?” Elena whispered: “Because she believed I chose you over her.” Maya's heart broke. “She knew about me?” “Yes.” “Then why didn't she come to me?” “Daniel convinced her that your father abandoned her because he wanted you instead.” Maya closed her eyes. The hatred. The betrayal. The attacks. All of it suddenly had a different meaning. Isabella wasn't simply an enemy. She was another victim. Maya looked at Daniel. “You manipulated her.” “I gave her a reason to fight.” “You destroyed my family.” “No.” He stepped closer. “Your family destroyed itself.” Suddenly, alarms began sounding. Red lights flashed across the vault. Michael looked around. “What is happening?” Daniel smiled. “The foundation has detected a succession dispute.” Maya looked at the screen. A message appeared. HEIR STATUS UNDER REVIEW. Alexander moved toward her. “What does that mean?” Maya shook her head. “I don't know.” Another message appeared. PRIMARY HEIR: MAYA BENNETT. Then: SECONDARY HEIR: ALEXANDER HAYES. And finally: CHALLENGER: ISABELLA BENNETT. Maya stared. “Isabella?” Daniel smiled. “She has filed a claim.” Alexander looked at Maya. “She can challenge your inheritance.” Maya nodded. “But she needs evidence.” Daniel's smile widened. “She has it.” The vault doors suddenly began closing. Maya looked at the screen. “What evidence?” Daniel stepped backward. “Ask your sister.” The doors closed between them. Maya, Alexander, Michael, and Elena were trapped inside. Then the final message appeared. SUCCESSION HEARING: 30 DAYS. Maya stared at the screen. Thirty days. That was all she had. Thirty days to prove she was the rightful heir. Thirty days to uncover the truth about her father. And thirty days to discover whether Isabella was truly her enemy… or the sister she had never known. Alexander stood beside her. “I'll help you.” Maya looked at him. “I know.” But this time, she wasn't sure whether that was a promise she could afford to believe.
