The Promise He Forgot

CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE PROMISE HE FORGOT Maya thought the nightmare was finally over. For the first time in weeks, she woke without checking her phone for threatening messages. There were no strange cars outside the house, no anonymous calls, and no footsteps following her whenever she left the building. Isabella had been arrested. Blackwood had been exposed. And the people responsible for so much pain were finally being investigated. But something about the silence bothered Maya. It felt too peaceful. She stood by the bedroom window, staring at the city below. Behind her, Alexander was still asleep. She watched him for a moment. After everything they had survived, she still couldn't believe they were here. Together. Not because of their families. Not because of money. Not because of a promise made before either of them understood what it meant. They had chosen each other. Maya smiled faintly. Then her phone vibrated. She turned. One message. YOU THINK IT'S OVER? Her smile disappeared. Another message appeared. ASK ALEXANDER ABOUT THE PROMISE. Maya's heart stopped. She slowly looked toward Alexander. “What promise?” Alexander woke when he heard her voice. “Maya?” She held out the phone. He read the message. His expression changed immediately. “What?” “You know something.” “I don't.” “Then why did they mention a promise?” Alexander sat up. “I honestly don't know.” Maya stared at him. She wanted to believe him. But the message had mentioned something specific. Something personal. Something only someone close to them could know. Alexander got out of bed. “Let me see the number.” “It says unknown.” He took the phone. Then his face went pale. “What?” He pointed at the screen. “Look at the date.” Maya frowned. The message had arrived at exactly 8:15 a.m. She looked at him. “So?” “My father used to send messages at that exact time.” Maya's heart raced. “Why?” “Because it was the time my mother died.” Silence. Alexander sat down. “My father blamed himself for her death. After that day, he sent a message to himself every year at 8:15.” “What did the messages say?” “Just one sentence.” “What sentence?” Alexander looked at her. Never forget the promise. Maya felt a chill. “What promise?” “I don't know.” “But your father did.” “Yes.” He opened his laptop. “I might have something.” They searched through old family records. After several minutes, Alexander found a folder that had been locked for years. His father's private records. There was a file dated twenty years earlier. The title was simple. THE PROMISE. Maya leaned closer. Alexander opened it. The document contained only a few paragraphs. But the first line made Maya's heart stop. I promise that the Hayes family will protect the Bennett family, no matter what happens. Maya stared at the screen. “Your family promised to protect mine?” “Yes.” “Why?” Alexander continued reading. The document explained that their families had once worked together before Blackwood became what it was. The Bennetts had possessed information. The Hayes family had possessed wealth. Together, they had created a private foundation intended to protect vulnerable businesses and families from powerful criminals. But something had gone wrong. Someone inside the foundation had betrayed them. The betrayal had nearly destroyed both families. Alexander scrolled further. Then he stopped. “There.” Maya looked. A second promise had been written underneath. If the foundation ever becomes corrupted, the next Hayes heir must protect the next Bennett heir. Maya's heart beat faster. “Next Bennett heir.” Alexander looked at her. “That was you.” “And the Hayes heir?” “Me.” Maya stepped away from the desk. “So this was all planned?” “No.” “Then why did our families keep us apart?” “I don't know.” She looked at him. “Maybe they were afraid we'd discover the truth.” Alexander closed the laptop. “We need to find out who made that promise.” Maya nodded. “And why.” --- That afternoon, they visited Alexander's father's old office. The room had been locked since his death. Alexander unlocked the door. Dust covered the desk. Maya walked slowly around the room. There were photographs of the Hayes family everywhere. Alexander's father. His mother. Alexander as a child. Then she noticed something unusual. A photograph had been turned face down. She picked it up. It showed Alexander's father standing beside Maya's father. Between them stood another man. Maya recognized him. “Who is that?” Alexander took the photograph. His expression changed. “That can't be.” “Who is he?” “Daniel Hayes.” Maya stared. “Your uncle?” “Yes.” “But he's dead.” “That's what I've always been told.” Maya turned the photograph over. A date was written on the back. The photograph had been taken only six months before Daniel's supposed death. Alexander looked shocked. “My father told me he died years earlier.” “Then someone lied.” Maya noticed something else. There was a small note beneath the photograph. THE PROMISE WAS NEVER BROKEN. THE WRONG HEIR WAS CHOSEN. Alexander read it twice. “What does that mean?” Maya shook her head. “I don't know.” Suddenly, the office door slammed shut. They turned. No one was there. Alexander tried the handle. Locked. Maya's phone vibrated. Another message. YOU'RE GETTING CLOSER. Then another. DON'T TRUST THE MAN WHO TELLS YOU HE'S YOUR PROTECTOR. Maya looked at Alexander. He stared back. “What does that mean?” “I don't know.” A sound came from inside the desk. Alexander opened the drawer. A small recording device was hidden beneath the papers. He pressed play. His father's voice filled the room. “If my son ever finds this recording, he must know one thing.” There was a pause. “The promise was not about money.” Maya listened carefully. “It was about a girl.” Alexander froze. His father continued. “She is the last person who can expose what happened.” Maya's heart raced. “Her name is Maya Bennett.” Alexander looked at her. The recording continued. “If she ever learns the truth, protect her. Not because she is a Bennett. Not because of the promise.” A pause. “But because she deserves the chance to choose her own life.” The recording ended. Maya couldn't speak. Alexander reached for her hand. “My father knew about you before we met.” “So did mine.” “Yes.” “Then our relationship wasn't as accidental as we thought.” Alexander looked at her. “Maybe meeting you was.” “Maybe.” “But protecting you wasn't.” Before Maya could answer, another sound came from the hallway. Someone was outside. Alexander quickly switched off the light. They waited. The door handle moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. Footsteps moved away. Alexander opened the door carefully. The hallway was empty. But something had been left on the floor. A black envelope. Maya picked it up. Inside was a single photograph. Her father. Alexander's father. And Daniel Hayes. All three were standing outside an old building. Maya recognized the location. “The foundation.” Alexander nodded. On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message. THE PERSON YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS NOT IN PRISON. Maya's stomach dropped. “Isabella?” “No.” “Then who?” Alexander looked at the photograph. “Someone who was working with her.” Maya remembered the names in the Blackwood account. Names of people who had escaped. People who had never been found. “Maybe one of them knows the truth.” Alexander nodded. “We need to find them.” Maya looked at the photograph again. There was one final detail she hadn't noticed. A date. Tomorrow. And beneath it: COME TO THE FOUNDATION ALONE. Maya looked at Alexander. “We're not going.” “I know.” “Then what do we do?” Alexander folded the photograph. “We find out who sent it first.” Maya nodded. But before they could leave, Alexander's phone rang. He answered. His face changed almost immediately. “Hello?” Silence. Then a voice spoke. Alexander's expression hardened. “Who is this?” Maya watched him. The caller said something. Alexander slowly lowered the phone. “What happened?” He looked at her. “They know about us.” “Who?” “The people who escaped.” Maya's heart raced. “What did they say?” Alexander swallowed. “They said the promise has been activated.” “What does that mean?” He looked into her eyes. “It means someone has officially declared you the next Bennett heir.” Maya felt a chill. “And what happens now?” Alexander took her hand. “They're coming for you.” Outside, a black car stopped across the street. Neither of them noticed the person sitting inside. The stranger watched the building carefully. Then they lifted a phone. “The promise has been activated.” A voice answered. “Good.” “Should we take her tonight?” “No.” “When?” The voice paused. “When she trusts him completely.” The call ended. And somewhere in the city, someone was already preparing for the next move. Maya had survived Blackwood. She had survived betrayal. She had survived the secrets of both families. But she hadn't yet discovered the most dangerous secret of all: The promise that was supposed to protect her… might be the very thing that put her life in danger.
