Maya barely slept.
The photograph of her mother and father lay on the table beside her bed, its existence turning everything she believed about her childhood upside down.
For ten years, she had believed her father was the one person who had protected her after her mother's death.
Now she couldn't even look at him without wondering what he had hidden.
The small key Alexander had found in the garden was another mystery.
Maya picked it up and examined it carefully.
It was old, made of silver-colored metal, with a tiny symbol engraved near the handle.
A crescent moon.
She had never seen it before.
A knock sounded.
“Come in.”
Alexander entered.
“You're awake.”
“I couldn't sleep.”
“Neither could I.”
Maya held up the key.
“Have you found out what this opens?”
“Not yet.”
“Then what are we waiting for?”
Alexander looked at her.
“You need rest.”
“I've spent ten years believing my mother was dead. I don't think I'm going to sleep peacefully until I know the truth.”
He didn't argue.
“Get dressed.”
“Where are we going?”
“To find out what the key opens.”
---
Twenty minutes later, they were in Alexander's car.
The city was quiet, with only a few cars moving through the streets.
Maya sat beside him, watching the lights pass through the window.
“Where are we going?”
“Daniel's old apartment.”
“You still have it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I couldn't bring myself to sell it.”
Maya looked at him.
“You never told me he had an apartment.”
“There are many things I never told you.”
“At least you're admitting it.”
Alexander glanced at her.
“I didn't expect you to trust me.”
“Good.”
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“You're difficult.”
“So I've been told.”
For a few minutes, neither spoke.
Then Maya asked, “Did Daniel ever talk about my mother?”
“Once.”
“What did he say?”
“He said she was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“I don't know.”
“Did he say anything about my father?”
Alexander tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“He mentioned Richard.”
Maya's heart skipped.
“What did he say?”
“That Richard wasn't telling the truth.”
She turned toward him.
“About what?”
“I don't know.”
Maya sighed.
“Why does everyone know something except me?”
“Because people were trying to protect you.”
“Protect me by lying?”
Alexander didn't answer.
---
Daniel's apartment was in an older part of the city.
Alexander unlocked the door.
Dust covered most of the furniture, but everything appeared almost untouched.
Maya slowly walked inside.
“This is where he lived?”
“Yes.”
She noticed photographs covering one wall.
Alexander stood beside them.
“That was Daniel's favorite place.”
Maya looked at a picture of two young brothers.
Alexander looked much younger.
He was smiling.
Maya had never seen him smile like that.
“You were close.”
“Yes.”
“What happened between you after he started investigating the companies?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why didn't you help him?”
“I did.”
“Did you?”
Alexander's expression became serious.
“I told him to stop.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew someone was dangerous.”
“Who?”
“I didn't know.”
“Then how did you know?”
Alexander looked away.
“Daniel received threats.”
Maya's stomach tightened.
“What kind?”
“Messages. Calls. Someone followed him.”
“Did he tell the police?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“He didn't trust them.”
Maya looked around.
“Was my mother ever here?”
Alexander hesitated.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Several times.”
Maya stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“You should have told me.”
“I didn't have proof.”
Maya walked toward him.
“You knew my mother had been here, and you still let me believe she was dead.”
“I didn't know she was alive.”
“But you knew she wasn't simply a stranger.”
Alexander looked into her eyes.
“I was trying to understand it myself.”
Maya wanted to be angry.
But she could see that he was telling the truth.
At least this time.
---
They searched Daniel's apartment for nearly an hour.
Nothing seemed useful.
Then Maya noticed a painting hanging crookedly on the wall.
She touched it.
It moved.
“Alexander.”
He came over.
Together, they removed the painting.
Behind it was a small safe.
Alexander tried several combinations.
None worked.
Maya looked at the key.
“Try this.”
He inserted it into a tiny lock beneath the keypad.
There was a click.
The safe opened.
Inside was a folder, an old phone, and several photographs.
Maya grabbed the folder.
The first page contained names.
Bennett.
Hayes.
Blackwood.
Her heart raced.
“It's the same company.”
Alexander took the documents.
“These are financial transfers.”
“How many?”
“Dozens.”
Maya looked closer.
Then she saw something.
“That's my father's signature.”
Alexander nodded.
“Your father authorized some of these transfers.”
Maya stepped back.
“No.”
“Look carefully.”
She did.
There was no mistake.
The signature belonged to Richard Bennett.
“My father stole money?”
“We don't know that.”
“Then why did he sign these?”
Alexander continued reading.
“Some of the transfers went to Blackwood Holdings.”
Maya's hands trembled.
“Maybe he was working with them.”
“Maybe.”
She looked at him.
“You keep saying maybe.”
“Because we're missing something.”
“What?”
Alexander picked up the old phone.
“This.”
He pressed the power button.
Nothing happened.
“It needs charging.”
Maya stared at it.
“What if there are answers inside?”
“Then we'll find them.”
---
Back at the mansion, Alexander connected the old phone to a charger.
They waited.
Maya paced around the room.
“You're making me nervous.”
“I'm not doing anything.”
“You're too calm.”
“I've learned not to panic before I know what I'm dealing with.”
Maya stopped.
“Were you always like this?”
“No.”
“What changed you?”
“Daniel.”
She lowered her voice.
“I’m sorry.”
Alexander looked at her.
“Don't be.”
The phone suddenly turned on.
Both moved closer.
There were only a few files.
One was a video.
Alexander pressed play.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
He looked tired.
His voice was quiet.
“If you're watching this, something has happened to me.”
Maya's heart began pounding.
Daniel continued.
“I don't know who I can trust anymore. The money isn't the real problem. Someone is using the companies to hide something much bigger.”
Alexander leaned closer to the screen.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Alexander, if you see this, don't trust anyone from the Bennett family.”
Maya froze.
The video continued.
“Especially Richard.”
The screen went black.
Maya couldn't breathe.
Alexander stared at the phone.
“My father…”
She shook her head.
“Why would Daniel say that?”
“I don't know.”
“But he knew something.”
“Yes.”
Maya looked at Alexander.
“Play it again.”
He did.
They watched silently.
Then Maya noticed something in the background.
“Stop.”
Alexander paused the video.
“What?”
“Behind him.”
There was a small picture hanging on the wall.
Maya recognized it.
It was the same photograph from the metal box.
Her mother.
Her father.
Daniel.
But this time, there was another person standing beside them.
A woman.
Maya stared.
“Who is she?”
Alexander zoomed in.
“I don't know.”
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“I've seen her before.”
“Where?”
“In one of my mother's old things.”
Alexander looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Maya suddenly remembered something from her childhood.
A woman had visited their home shortly before her mother disappeared.
She had worn a silver necklace with a crescent moon.
Maya looked at the key in her hand.
The same crescent moon was engraved on it.
Her heart began racing.
“The woman.”
“What about her?”
“She had this symbol.”
Alexander took the key.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
He looked at the engraving.
“We need to find her.”
---
The next morning, Maya went to see her father.
She didn't tell Alexander at first.
Richard was sitting in his office when she entered.
“Maya?”
“We need to talk.”
He looked concerned.
“About what?”
“Mom.”
His expression changed.
Maya noticed.
“You knew she was alive, didn't you?”
Richard stood.
“Who told you that?”
“So you did know.”
“I never said that.”
“You didn't have to.”
“Maya, listen to me.”
“No.”
She placed the photograph on his desk.
Richard stared at it.
His face went pale.
“Where did you get this?”
“That doesn't matter.”
“It does.”
“Who is the woman?”
Richard looked at the photograph.
“What woman?”
“The one beside Mom and Daniel.”
Richard said nothing.
Maya's voice trembled.
“Dad, what happened ten years ago?”
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he whispered,
“Your mother discovered something she was never supposed to see.”
“What?”
“Something about our family.”
“What did she discover?”
Richard's eyes filled with fear.
Before he could answer, the office door suddenly opened.
Alexander stood there.
His expression was hard.
“Richard.”
Maya turned.
“How did you know I was here?”
“I followed you.”
Richard looked between them.
“You shouldn't have come here.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Neither should you.”
“What does that mean?” Maya asked.
Richard looked at his daughter.
Then he whispered,
“Your mother isn't the only person who disappeared.”
Maya froze.
“What?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“Daniel wasn't killed in an accident.”
Alexander's expression changed.
Richard continued.
“He disappeared before they found his body.”
Maya stared at him.
“Then who was the man they buried?”
Silence filled the room.
Richard looked at Alexander.
“That's what your brother was trying to discover.”
Maya felt the world spinning around her.
The truth was no longer a simple mystery.
It was something much darker.
And someone had spent years making sure Maya would never find it.
