Chapter 14

THE RETURN The office was quieter than usual that evening. Most of the staff had already left, their voices fading into the distance, leaving behind the soft hum of air conditioning and the occasional echo of footsteps in the hallway. Maya packed her things slowly at her desk, her mind still lingering on the spreadsheets she had been reviewing earlier. She slipped a file into her bag, then paused for a second, glancing toward Alexander’s office. The light was still on. She hesitated. Should she wait? Ask if he needed anything? Before she could decide, the sharp buzz of a phone cut through the quiet. She froze slightly. Inside the office, Alexander picked up the call, his voice low. “Hello?” There was a pause. Then— “Alexander.” The voice on the other end was soft… controlled… and familiar. His posture changed instantly. A flicker of recognition crossed his face. “…Lilian.” Maya, still by the door, felt something shift, though she couldn’t explain why. “I’m back,” the voice continued smoothly. “And we need to see each other. Tonight.” Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly. “Where?” “Le Chateau. Seven o’clock. Don’t keep me waiting.” The call ended. Just like that. Silence filled the room again. Alexander exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck like he was trying to ease tension that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. That calm, controlled version of him… slipped, just a little. “Maya.” She straightened immediately. “Yes, sir?” “I need you to head home,” he said, voice firm but quieter than usual. “Don’t stay late tonight.” She frowned slightly. “Is everything alright?” A pause. Then— “There’s a meeting I need to attend.” That was all. No explanation. No room for questions. “…Alright, sir.” She nodded, picked up her bag, and left. But as she walked out of the building, something didn’t sit right. Not fear. Just… a feeling that something had changed. By seven o’clock, Alexander’s car pulled smoothly into the entrance of one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city. And she was already there. Lilian. Standing tall, elegant, completely at ease like she owned the space. She turned as he approached, a soft smile forming on her lips. “Alexander.” He stopped in front of her, hands in his pockets. “Lilian.” “It’s been a while,” she said gently. “It has.” She stepped closer. Too close. Not touching… but enough to make her presence felt. “I’ve missed you.” Alexander’s expression didn’t change. “I don’t think now is the time for that.” She smiled slightly. “Oh, I think it is.” Her eyes locked onto his. “I’ve been watching, you know. From afar. The company… your decisions… everything.” His brows furrowed slightly. “And?” “And I’ve decided something.” A pause. Then she said it—calmly, confidently: “I intend to claim what’s mine.” Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly. “And what exactly is that?” She stepped even closer. “You.” Silence. Thick. Unavoidable. “I’m going to be by your side,” she continued. “And starting tomorrow… I’ll be working at Venn Holdings.” That caught his attention. “My father spoke to yours,” she added casually. “Everything is already arranged.” Of course it was. Alexander let out a slow breath. “I don’t need interference, Lilian.” She laughed softly. “This isn’t interference. This is… presence.” Then, more firmly— “I’m here. And I’m not leaving.” He looked at her for a long moment. Then said, flatly— “You’ll follow the structure of the company. That’s not optional.” She smiled again. “For appearances… of course.” That answer didn’t sit well with him. But he didn’t push further. Because he already knew. This wasn’t just about work. The next morning, everything felt different. Maya noticed it immediately. The air. The way people moved. Even the way conversations paused slightly as she walked past. She ignored it. But when she got to Alexander’s office—She stopped. There was someone inside. A woman. Tall. Elegant. Composed. Talking to him like she belonged there. Maya knocked lightly and stepped in. “Good morning, sir.” Alexander looked up. For a split second—just a second—his expression shifted when he saw her. Then it was gone. “Morning, Maya. Go ahead with your tasks. I’ll be in meetings today.” “Of course.” Then the woman turned. And their eyes met. A small smile curved her lips. “You must be Maya.” Her voice was smooth. Polished. “I’ve heard about you.” Maya stepped forward calmly and shook her hand. “Yes, ma’am.” Their hands parted. But the look lingered. Lilian was observing her.Carefully. Maya didn’t flinch. She simply nodded slightly and stepped back. Professional and Unbothered. But Alexander noticed everything. By mid-morning, the entire office knew. Lilian was here. Not as a guest. Not as a visitor. But as someone with authority. She moved through departments with quiet confidence, attending meetings, asking questions, observing processes like she was already part of the system. And everywhere she went—People noticed. Some admired her. Some feared her. And some… Watched carefully. Maya stayed focused. She didn’t involve herself. Didn’t react. Didn’t give anyone a reason to question her. But Lilian noticed her. More than once. The way she worked. The way she spoke. The way she didn’t try to impress anyone. It was… unusual. Madeline, watching from a distance, caught onto it almost immediately. A slow smile spread across her face. Perfect. This… was exactly what she needed. Another powerful woman. Another distraction. Another tool. “If Alex won’t step down willingly…” she murmured to herself, “then we’ll make things uncomfortable enough for him to.” And Maya? Her eyes darkened slightly. “She’ll have to go too.” Back at her desk, Maya finally paused. Just for a second. She leaned back slightly, exhaling. The quiet tension building around her. She glanced toward Alexander’s office. Then quickly looked away. No. She wouldn’t get involved. She was here to work. Nothing more.
