WHEN STRENGTH BREAKS
Lilian had arrived just the day before, but somehow, it already felt like she had always been there, like a storm that didn’t need noise to announce itself. Just presence.
Polished. Elegant. Smiling. But sharp.
Maya remembered the first time she approached her.
“You’re new here, aren’t you?” Lilian had said, her voice light, almost friendly but not quite.
There was something underneath it.
Something testing.
Maya had lifted her chin politely, meeting her gaze without hesitation. “I’ve worked in busy environments before. I can manage.”
Lilian’s lips had curved slightly. Not a full smile.
Just enough.
“Oh, I’m sure you can… for now.”
That “for now” had stayed with Maya longer than she expected.
And she was beginning to understand why.
It didn’t take long.
The whispers started almost immediately.
At first, it was subtle.
A comment here. A look there. Nothing direct. But it was there.
Lilian didn’t attack openly.
No.She was smarter than that.
Every time Maya did something right—finished a report, corrected a file, handled a task efficiently—Lilian would step in.
“Oh, Maya… are you sure about this?”
“Maybe you should double-check.”
“I think this could be improved.”
Always calm. Always smiling. Always loud enough for people nearby to hear.
Maya tried to ignore it. She told herself:
Just focus. Don’t react. Do your work.
She had dealt with pressure before.
She had dealt with people trying to undermine her.
But this… This was different.
Because it wasn’t just Lilian.
Madeline was there too. Supporting it in ways no one could really prove.
Situations twisted just enough to make Maya look like she made mistakes.
By mid-morning, it was already getting to her.
She had corrected three errors that weren’t hers.
Handled two unnecessary criticisms. And smiled through more whispers than she could count.
But then—
Lilian walked up to her desk again.
“Really, Maya,” she said, tilting her head slightly, “I didn’t expect someone in your… position to understand the proper way to handle a client’s portfolio.”
Maya’s fingers tightened slightly on the edge of her desk.
“I suppose experience is… everything,” Lilian added, her voice still sweet.
Maya didn’t respond.She couldn’t.
Not because she didn’t have anything to say.
But because she knew that was exactly what Lilian wanted.
A reaction.
Shortly after, the emails started. Anonymous,Professional and dangerous emails.
“Please ensure Maya’s reports are reviewed.”
“Some inconsistencies have been noticed.”
“Double-check her submissions.”
Maya stared at her screen. Her chest tightening.
Her hands going slightly cold.
She knew she didn’t make those mistakes.
She knew it. But that didn’t matter.
She tried to push through it. She really did.
She kept working. Kept pretending it didn’t affect her.
But by the time she got back to her office… she was done.
The door closed behind her. And the silence was too loud.
She dropped her files on the desk. Tried to straighten them and tried to breathe.
But her hands were shaking. Her vision blurred.
And before she could stop it— Tears filled her eyes.
“No…” she whispered to herself.
She blinked quickly. Trying to hold it back.
“I’m fine…”
But she wasn’t. Not this time.
Her shoulders trembled slightly. Her chest felt tight and heavy.
Like everything she had been holding in all morning had finally decided to come out.
The door opened softly.
“Maya?”
Alexander.
She quickly wiped her face.
“I’m fine, sir. Really.”
But her voice betrayed her. It wasn’t steady. Not even close.
Alexander didn’t say anything immediately.
He just looked at her. Taking in the redness of her eyes. The way her hands trembled. The way she avoided his gaze.
Then he walked closer. Slowly.
“You’re not fine,” he said quietly.
Maya swallowed.
“I—”
“Not with her here,” he added gently. “Not with everything going on.”
That was it. That was all it took.
Her composure cracked.
“I’m just tired,” she said, but her voice broke halfway through.
Alexander lowered himself slightly, meeting her at eye level.
“It’s more than that,” he said softly.
She gripped the papers in her hand tightly.
Too tightly.
“I… I don’t know how much longer I can do this,” she whispered.
Her voice trembled.
“Every day it’s just… something else. The whispers, the emails, the way they look at me…”
Her eyes filled again.
“And she doesn’t stop… she just keeps going… like she wants me to fail… like she wants to take everything I’ve worked for…”
Alexander’s expression softened completely.
All the sharpness. All the authority. Gone.
He reached out, placing a firm, steady hand on her shoulder.
“You’re not alone,” he said quietly. “Not while I’m here.”
She nodded slightly.
But the tears were already falling. “I know… but it’s just… a lot…”
And then—He pulled her into him.
Not rushed.Not forceful.Just… protective.
“It’s okay,” he murmured softly. “You don’t have to hold everything in.”
That was it. The last bit of control she had was gone.
She broke. Completely.
She buried her face against his chest, crying quietly at first…
Then harder. Her body shaking with everything she had been holding in.
“I didn’t do anything wrong…” she cried softly.
“I know,” he said immediately.
“I tried my best…” “I know.”
“Why is it like this…”
His arms tightened slightly around her. “I won’t let it continue,” he said quietly.
She held onto him. Without thinking or questioning. And he didn’t let go.
For a moment…Everything else faded.
The office.The whispers.The pressure.It all disappeared.
And all that was left…Was warmth and quiet.
Then something shifted. Subtle and Unplanned.
Alexander pulled back slightly.
Just enough to see her tear-streaked face.
His hand moved gently to her face.
Wiping a tear. Slowly and Carefully.
And before he could stop himself—He leaned in.And pressed a soft kiss to her temple.
It was light.Almost instinctive. Almost like he didn’t even think about it.
Maya froze. Her breath caught. Her heart started racing.
And just as quickly—He pulled back.
His eyes widened slightly.
“Maya… I—”
He stepped back.
Running a hand through his hair. Frustrated.
“I shouldn’t have done that.”
His voice dropped. “I wasn’t thinking… I’m sorry.”
Maya blinked.
Still trying to process everything.
“It’s… okay,” she said softly. But even she wasn’t sure what that meant.
Silence filled the room.Not uncomfortable.
But… heavy.
Alexander straightened slightly.
Trying to regain control. Trying to put distance back where it belonged.
“I’ll handle everything,” he said, his voice steadier now. “You won’t have to go through this again.”
She nodded slowly. Still quiet. He left the room shortly after.
And the moment he was gone…Maya exhaled deeply.
She sat down slowly. Her hands resting on her lap.
Then… almost unconsciously… She touched her temple.
Right where he had kissed her.
Her heart was still beating fast. Her thoughts… scattered.
She didn’t understand what just happened.
By mid-afternoon, she had composed herself again.
At least on the outside.
But inside…Everything still felt different.
Lilian moved through the office like nothing had happened.
That same faint, cruel amusement in her eyes whenever she looked at Maya.
But this time…Maya didn’t feel completely alone.
Alexander was there. Quietly shielding her in ways no one else seemed to notice.
And no matter how much she tried to ignore it…She couldn’t forget. The way he held her.The way he spoke. The way he made everything feel… safe.
And for Alexander..That moment made one thing painfully clear.
What he felt for her was no longer something he could ignore.
