TOO CLOSE TO DANGER
The rest of the day felt off. It wasn’t loud or obvious, but something had changed. Even the air in the office felt heavier.
Maya sat at her desk, staring at her screen, but her mind wandered. It kept drifting back.To the missing file. To the system glitch. To that quiet, unsettling realization.
Someone was watching. It wasn’t just data anymore. It wasn’t just work.
It felt personal now.
She leaned back slightly, exhaling softly.
“Are you okay?” Mark asked as he glanced at her.
“I’m fine,” she replied.
But her voice lacked the usual steadiness.Mark noticed. He chose not to say anything else.He nodded and returned to his work.
But Maya knew the truth. She wasn’t fine.
Not really.
For the first time since this all started…She felt it.
Fear. Not loud. Not overwhelming.
Just… there. “Come with me.”
Alexander’s voice came from behind her. She turned right away. “Sir?”
“Now.” No explanation. No pause.
She stood up quickly and followed him to his office. The door closed softly behind them.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he stepped closer. Closer than usual.
Maya noticed. But she didn’t step back.
“You didn’t tell me everything,” he said.
Her brows furrowed slightly. “What do you mean?”
He held her gaze.
“You’re not just worried about the file.” She hesitated.
That was the problem with him. He noticed everything.
“It means someone is paying attention to me now,” she said quietly.
“And?” he asked.
“And that makes me a problem.”
The words hung in the air.
Alexander’s expression shifted. Something darker. Sharper and Protective.
“No,” he said firmly. “It makes them a problem.”
Maya looked at him. Something in the way he said it…
It wasn’t just reassurance. It felt like a decision. Like he had already drawn a line.
“You shouldn’t stay late anymore,” he added.
“I have work to finish.”
“I’ll assign it to someone else.”
She shook her head immediately. “No, sir. I can handle it.”
His jaw tightened slightly. “This isn’t about capability.”
“I know,” she said softly. “But I can’t start backing down now. That will only make it worse.”
Silence. He studied her Carefully.
She was calm. Too calm and Stubborn. And somehow… fearless.
“You don’t scare easily,” he said.
“I just don’t like being controlled.”
A faint smile crossed his lips. “You’re making this difficult.”
“I’m just doing my job.”
For a moment, neither moved. Then he exhaled quietly and stepped back. “Fine,” he said. “But you don’t stay alone.”
She blinked.
“Sir?”
“If you’re here late,” he said, his voice firm, “I’m here.”
Her heartbeat shifted. That… wasn’t necessary. But she didn’t argue.
“Okay.”
What she didn’t know— What she couldn’t see, Was how much that moment meant to him.
Because Alexander wasn’t just being careful. He was being protective. Too protective.
And it wasn’t just about the situation anymore. Somewhere along the way… His feelings had started to change.
He didn’t fully understand it. He didn’t even want to admit it. But it was there.
Growing. Quietly And that was dangerous. Because she was his assistant. Because he was her boss.
Because this… wasn’t supposed to happen. So he buried it.
Kept his tone professional and his distance when he could. Even when everything in him wanted to step closer.
But Maya? Maya didn’t see any of that. To her, he was just her boss.
A good one. Someone she respected. Nothing more. And that difference…Would matter.
Across the office, someone else was watching too. Daniel stood by the glass wall of his office, hands in his pockets, his expression calm as always.
A faint smile rested on his lips. But his eyes? They were sharp.
He had seen the way Alexander approached Maya. Too quickly. Too instinctively.
Interesting.
Daniel wasn’t a fool. He understood people.
And right now— He was starting to notice something else.
Alexander liked her.
The thought settled slowly in his mind. Then deepened. And strangely, He didn’t like it.
Because somewhere along the way…He had started noticing her too.
At first, it was nothing. Just curiosity.
She was different. Too bold and Too… unbothered by status.
Then it turned into something else. He found himself watching her more. Listening when she spoke.
Noticing the way she held her ground—even with him.
And Daniel? He wasn’t used to that. So he did what he always did. He hid it.
Behind sarcasm, pressure and subtle intimidation. To everyone else, It seemed like he was just being difficult.
