Chapter 4

We heard footsteps. Soft at first, then heavier. Whispers drifted through the house like smoke. Terrified, the three of us clung together, hugging as if we could squeeze the fear out of our bodies. “God, please,” I prayed under my breath. “If I survive this, I’ll praise you forever. Please save us.” A creaking sound broke the silence. The door to the living room. It swung open slowly, but no one was standing there. We bolted to the kitchen, each of us grabbing the sharpest thing we could find. knives, anything to defend ourselves. We locked the kitchen door. The doorknob began to shake violently. Sweat poured down my back. My hands trembled. Even Aumiree had tears streaming down her face. “We shouldn’t have gone to the club last night,” she whispered, voice breaking. Zaryer and I nodded, our own tears falling, even our noses running. The fear was so heavy it felt like we couldn’t breathe. The door burst open. We squeezed our eyes shut and raised our makeshift weapons, ready to strike. “What are you doing?” a familiar voice barked. “Do I look like a thief? And why are you crying?” It was Matt. My fear turned to anger. “Why couldn’t you call instead of sneaking inside like this?” I shouted, my voice cracking. Zaryer and Aumiree had to hold me back so I wouldn’t hit my brother. He only looked more confused. “Please, excuse us,” Zaryer said firmly. “We need to calm down.” Matt nodded and stepped into the living room to wait while we tried to compose ourselves. After we’d washed our faces and steadied our breathing, Zaryer glared at Matt. “Just because I gave you a spare key doesn’t mean you can come in without warning. What if we’d been naked?” “Huh?” Matt scoffed. “I was the one who saved you three last night in your drunken state. You were all babbling about wolves, green-eyed men, screaming, and then you collapsed. What kind of horror movie did you watch?” He shook his head. “You need to snap out of these delusions. I don’t even understand you girls. Everyone’s worried about you, the emergency call you made to Neyar freaked out your parents. They’re waiting at home. And maybe I should show you the video of how you were behaving last night…” He smirked. “Or maybe I’ll keep it for future blackmail.” We stared at him in silence, still shaken. “Come on,” he said at last. “Let’s go home.” The car ride was eerily quiet, like a graveyard. Each of us sat with our thoughts swirling. Maybe Matt was right. Maybe it was all a dream. But then I caught a glimpse of something strange on Aumiree’s arm a faint, glowing symbol that disappeared before I could point it out. My heart lurched. Was this real? Or just a nightmare that refused to end?
