Chapter 4

1108 Words
Me and Amanda meet in the hallway and make our way to the cafeteria. Usually when there isn't any tables we grab our food and go sit under the tree in the big courtyard outside. But today there was plenty of open tables so we chose to stay inside because it was slightly cold and groggy looking like it might rain at any minute. "How was class?" Amanda asked me, and I could tell she was searching my face because she knew something had upset me. "it was good" "liar" she says and looks at me with a knowing look waiting for me to tell her what happened. We get our food and go sit down and I finally spilled the whole scenario with what happened in class. She proceeds with the matur-ish type talk about how I may be experiencing my first crush and how defensiveness and possessiveness is normal. I laugh at her because she always tries to make her advice sound so scientifically proven. "Do you like girls?" I blurted out and amanda almost choked on her food because she was laughing. "What on earth made you ask me that?" Amanda says laughing. "I don't know, almost all girls our age are boy crazy and you literally never have any interest in anyone, you don't even acknowledge that a boy is cute when he very clearly is" I say "I don't know, I have honestly experimented with girls before because I didn't want to toss my virginity away to some douchebag guy that was just going to break my heart, but it really wasn't my cup of tea. I like guys I just don't want to waste my youth with someone who isn't perfect for me. When I find that person I will know and I will be fully invested, Plus if I was interested in girls you would definitely know that information already, you'd be my first pick" Amanda wiggles her eyebrows at me and then burst out laughing, her laugh was contagious and before long we were both laughing. "Lover boy sure does look at you a lot though, I believe it's safe to say he might be crushing on you too" she says as her gaze is drifted elsewhere. I turn to look and see what she's seeing and OMG Jessie is looking directly at me, we just made eye contact and he winked at me. I don't think I have ever turned back around so fast, and now I'm face palming myself for how unnaturally quick that reaction was. "WHY wouldn't you tell me he was looking at me and tell me not to turn around?" I say with my head down "I don't know, I think yalls little glances at each other and the blushing is cute" Amanda says. "A crush is one thing but it will never lead anywhere so I don't want to encourage it" I say "And why wouldn't it ever lead somewhere?" Amanda asks "Because we just aren't the same, not only that but Regina would literally make my school life way more hell than it is now and I don't think I could handle it" I say honestly. "I've never saw Jessie stick his neck out for any of Regina's other victims, he does stand up for you pretty often and you can tell by the look in his eyes that he thinks your the most gorgeous woman he's ever seen" Amanda says while batting her eyelashes in a goofy way. "Your so ridiculous, there's no way, even if I did want to take it further, my trust issues literally wouldn't let me. We both know how dating worked out for me last time" I say. "We aren't going to open that can of depression today lacey. Jace was a t**t, but just because there was one rotten apple doesn't mean you should turn everyone down afterwards, not every guy is like that. Jessie is showing genuine interest in you, even if it isn't something long term you should just try to have fun with someone. You don't wanna be the 75 year old woman who tells her grandkids that her teens and early 20s were basically spent acting like a nun." Amanda says laughing. "Yeah I guess you're right but I can't even make myself speak to him if I wanted to" I say. "Well maybe don't initiate it just yet, we will work on this, for right now maybe just try to not avoid him like the plague, and things should get easier and you will begin to get comfortable enough to look at him and have small conversations" Amanda says. "Okay. I suppose you're right. I really don't wanna be a goody two shoes my whole life." I say Out of nowhere my body temperature felt like it sky rocketed. "I'm ready to get out of this cafeteria I literally feel like I'm about to suffocate its so hot in here" I tell amanda. Amanda looks at me sideways with a really curious look for a moment like she's about to say something meaningful and then proceeds with "are you going through an early menopause or something because you have been acting the weirdest" she asks. I'm fully intending on ignoring her as I get up to throw my trash away, but one my way there I'm stopped mid-tracks by my principle and 2 officers, and it really caught me off guard, i havent done anything to get in trouble, why would they want me? They asked me to follow them but luckily amanda intervened "Is she in trouble for something?" amanda asked. "No miss Jones we need to speak with her privately" the principle responded. "i would rather you just tell me now, my anxiety is really bad and I dont want to be singled out" i respond. They only looked at me with sad eyes but the sympathy judt wasnt truly there, "Lacey theres been an accident, one of these officers will escort you home, one of the neighbors went to check on your mother but she.... uhm she...." he started but he didnt have to say it, i knew what words he was trying to get out. Shortly after they began speaking my ears stopped working correctly so I only heard muffled sounds, my eyes were glazed over with tears, and I dropped my tray causing my drink to hit the floor and spray everywhere, I felt like I couldn't breathe. I somewhat gained my senses realizing that everyone was looking at me, and I ran as hard and as fast as I could to get out of there.
