Maya came to find me without saying anything on the phone first.
She appeared in the living room doorway where I was sitting on the floor with Aria and Gerald working through an arrangement of toy animals that Aria had assigned specific roles to, and she looked at me in the way that meant something had happened.
I stood up.
She told me in the hallway, quiet and direct.
I listened and felt the particular shift in the ground that happens when something you've been preparing for becomes immediate.
"I'll drive you," she said.
"You don't have to."
"I know." She already has her keys. "Aria comes too or Sofia takes her."
