Two: Secrets Unveiled:
Sophia’s mind raced as she stood frozen in the shadowed alcove. Lucas's words echoed in her head: "Damian my brother is going to ruin your family." She felt like a knot was tightening in her brain. Could this be true? It was the man she was about to have the plan run off from her family. She felt so devastated.
She looked straight at Lucas, trying to study his mind by the appearance of his face, trying to search for any hint of deception. But Lucas' eyes remained locked on her, unshaking, looking as if it was a heart of concern.
"Why should I trust you?" she finally asked, her voice shaking. "You and Damian… you’re brothers. Why would you betray him like that?"
Lucas sighed and glanced around, as though making sure no one could overhear them. His jaw tightened before he answered.
"I don’t expect you to trust me right away. But you need to understand, Damian and I aren’t close. We have never been. In fact, we haven’t seen eye to eye on anything in years. I’ve kept my distance because I know what kind of man he is—what kind of deals he’s willing to make to get what he wants." He paused, his expression softening slightly. "You don’t know half of what Damian’s capable of, Sophia. I’m not just saying this to cause trouble. I’m trying to protect you… and your family."
Sophia swallowed hard, her fingers gripping the fabric of her dress. The idea that Lucas, someone she barely knew, would go to such lengths to warn her—it was unsettling. But could she really believe him? Her marriage to Damian was less than twenty-four hours.
"What kind of contract can we call this?" she asked cautiously. "What’s Damian really planning?"
Lucas hesitated, his eyes going to and from the ballroom behind them. The lively band music from the gala continued in the background, quite different from the tension between them.
"I don’t know all the details," he admitted, "but I know it involves your father's company. My brother Damian needs the business as a cover for some offshore accounts he’s setting up. There is going to be movement of money through Carter Pharmaceuticals, and if anyone catches on, your father will be the one holding the bag. He’ll be implicated in financial crimes, and Damian will be free and clear."
Sophia’s heart pounded in her chest. The weight of the situation hit her like a freight train. If Lucas was telling the truth, her father wasn’t just making a mistake by agreeing to this marriage—he was walking straight into a trap.
"And you’re just telling me this now?" she whispered harshly, barely able to keep the tremble from her voice. "Why not sooner? Why not warn my father before it got this far?"
"I tried," Lucas said, frustration evident in his tone. "But your father wouldn’t listen to me. He trusts Damian, even though he shouldn’t. Your father was desperate—he still is—and Damian knows how to play people when they’re vulnerable. I’m telling you now because you’re the one with the power to stop this. If you don’t marry him, the deal falls apart."
Sophia’s breath seized. Could it really be that simple? Refusing to marry Damian. Would Damian save her family?
But then she remembered her father’s sorrowful and tired eyes, how his voice cracked when he accepted his error and failure that led to the collapse of his company.
He had sacrificed everything to build his company from the ground up. Could she really be the one to crush all his hopes by walking away from this marriage? All these were the thoughts echoing in the mind of Sophia as she battled between accepting the offer or rejecting it.
"I don’t know what to do," she murmured, feeling overwhelmed by the weight of it all. "I can’t just… back out. My father’s counting on me."
Lucas’s gaze softened. He took a step closer, lowering his voice as he spoke.
"Sophia, I get it. You want to protect your family. But Damian doesn’t care about you or your father. He sees this marriage as a transaction, nothing more. If you go through with it, you’re giving him everything he needs to destroy your family. I know it feels impossible, but you still have a choice."
Sophia bit her lip, her mind spinning with doubt. Could she really trust Lucas? She had spent years hearing about Damian’s cold reputation, but this… this was something else entirely. If what Lucas was saying was true, then Damian was far more dangerous than she’d ever imagined. But how could she make such a monumental decision based on the words of a man she hardly knew?
Before she could say anything, a familiar voice cut through the tension like a knife.
"Sophia."
She quickly turned, her heart beeping. Damian stood afar of, his dark eyes gazing on her with an intention that made her blood run cold. His mind was unreadable, but there was a lukewarmness in his gaze that sent a chill down her morrow.
"Damian…" she stammered, battling to compose herself. "I didn’t expect to see you here."
Damian's eyes flickered shortly at Lucas, thereafter back on Sophia. He smiled, but it wasn't a true smile.
"I didn’t expect to see you here, either," he said smoothly. "Especially not in the company of my brother."
The tension in the air thickened. Lucas took a step forward, his posture defensive, as though ready to shield Sophia from whatever was about to happen next. But Damian remained calm, his voice low and measured as he spoke.
"I’d like to have a word with my wife," Damian said, his eyes gazing at Lucas. "Alone."
Sophia’s heart pounded in her chest. She looked at Lucas with hesitation for a moment, his jaw clenched. For a second, she thought he might refuse to leave, but then he nodded slowly.
"I’ll be around if you call me," Lucas said quietly, his eyes lingering on her for a moment. Afterward, he turned and disappeared into the crowd.
Now, it was just the two of them.
Damian moved closer, his gaze dark and unreadable. The air between them felt charged, like the calm before a storm.
"I see my brother has been loading your mind with naughty and nonsense things," he said, his tone laced with quiet menace. "Whatever he told you, Sophia, it’s a lie. Lucas has always been a troublemaker, trying to undermine me at every turn and looking for any way to speak evil of me."
Sophia swallowed, struggling to find her voice. "He told me you’re planning to use my father’s company… that you’re setting him up."
Damian’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, his mind was filled with something dangerous which showed even on his face. . This marriage is an opportunity for both of us. Don’t let Lucas manipulate you into throwing this offer away and allowing your father's company to die a natural death."
Sophia’s mind spun. Damian was smooth, confident, and undeniably convincing. But Lucas’s warning still lingered in the back of her mind. Was Damian telling the truth, or was this just another layer of his manipulation?
"I… I don’t know what to think," she whispered faintly, her voice barely audible for another person to hear.
Damian stretched for her hand, his contact cooling her skin.
"Open up your mind, Sophia," he said softly, "Your family’s survival is in your hands. Don’t make a mistake you’ll regret."
Sophia became more worried as Damian’s words threatened. But before she could say anything, her phone beeped in her hand. She looked down at the screen, her blood running cold.
A new message from Lucas.
"Let's meet outside. Now. It's more serious than you think."
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Serious? She pondered on what could possibly be serious?
Her pulse fastened, then she knew she had to make a choice. Accept Damian's offer and follow through with the wedding… or go to Lucas and find out the truth, no matter the cost.
With her heart pounding, Sophia made her decision.
And she had no idea what she was about to uncover.
