CHAPTER FOUR

Shadows of Deceit: The air in the woods was heavy and suffocating. Every breath Sophia took felt like it was pulling shards of glass into her lungs. She was still clinched beside Lucas, her whole body trembling, not because of the situation she found herself but from the growing sense of dread that clawed at her mind. The image with the gun was still out there, probably more of them. They all seem not ready to give up easily. Lucas combed their surroundings, his eagle eyes looking back and forth through the shadows of the forest. "We can’t stay here," he whispered again. "It’s only a matter of time, they will locate us, we just have to keep moving." Sophia was shaking, her throat too tight to speak. She believed in Lucas, but despite that, fear was gnawing at her insides. How had her life turned into this nightmare? Less than a day ago, she had been at the gala, trying to figure out how to escape Damian’s controlling grasp. Now, she was running through the forest, being hunted like prey. "What if we can’t escape them?" she finally whispered, voicing her deepest fear. Lucas looked at her, his face hard but determined. "We will. But you have to trust me." Sophia nodded again, swallowing her fear. She had no choice. Lucas had been her only lifeline so far, and she had to believe that he could get them out of this. But deep down, doubts still flickered. How could he guarantee their safety when Damian seemed to have people everywhere? Lucas rose to his feet cautiously, pulling Sophia up with him. "We’ll head west, stay off the main roads. There’s a river not far from here. If we can reach it, we might be able to lose them in the water." Sophia’s heart sank when she remembered that they had to pass through a river in the dead of night, but she remained silent. Lucas had a plan, this is the only hope Sophia clanged on. They started moving again, passing through the dense undergrowth, all trees closing in around them like prison walls. The branches of the trees touching and scratching clothes, and the wet and damp smell of the earth filled their noses. Sophia’s heart was full of steps, the fear of being caught making every sound around them feel like it was amplified. The rustle of leaves, the snap of a twig—it all seemed louder, more dangerous. For what felt like an eternity, they moved in silence, both of them on edge, ears straining for any sign that their pursuers were close. But there was nothing. Just the haunting quiet of the forest, broken only by their hurried footsteps. Finally, after what felt like miles, Lucas stopped, motioning for Sophia to crouch beside him. "We’re close to the river," he whispered. "Just beyond those trees." Sophia could hear it now too, the faint sound of rushing water. Relief washed over her. If they could reach the river, maybe they could buy themselves some time. Lucas took her hand again, and they moved toward the sound of the water. But as they approached the riverbank, something felt off. The air seemed too still, too quiet. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath. Suddenly, a loud c***k echoed through the woods—like the snap of a branch. Sophia froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She turned to Lucas, her eyes wide with fear. "Did you hear that?" she whispered. Lucas nodded, his face tense. "Someone’s close." Before they could move, a flashlight beam swept through the trees, slicing through the darkness like a knife. Sophia’s stomach dropped. They were surrounded. "Over there!" a voice shouted from behind them. "I see them!" Panic surged through Sophia’s veins. She grabbed Lucas’s arm, her mind racing. "What do we do?" Lucas didn’t hesitate. "Run!" he shouted. They bolted for the riverbank, the sound of footsteps crashing through the underbrush behind them. Sophia’s heart was pounding in her ears, her legs burning with the effort of running. But she didn’t stop. She couldn’t stop. As they approached the edge of the river, Lucas get hold on her hand and pulled her down the muddy embankment. The river flows past them, with a fast and dangerous current. Behind them, was the noise and sound of their pursuers, their flashlights bouncing wildly as they looked around the riverbanks. Their water sound was so loud that it drowned out everything else. Sophia’s chest burned with the effort of swimming, her dress drawing her down as the cold seeped into her bones, but she kept going, focusing on Lucas's steady grip and his determination that they must escape from their pursuers. Finally, after what felt like it would never end again, they arrived at the other side of the river both gasping for breath as they both collapsed onto the muddy bank of the river. A gunshot. Suddenly, Lucas jerked up, his eyes widely open. "We need to move," he said urgently. "They’re still after us." Sophia worried and troubled in her heart, her heart racing again. She didn’t know how much more of this she could take, but she had no choice. They had to keep going. Lucas supported her to get on her feet again, and they began to move again, their wet clothes clinging to their bodies as they pushed through the thick undergrowth. Every step felt like a struggle, but the sound of more gunshots in the distance kept them going. For several hours they were running and running and they finally reached a clearing in the woods. In the distance, Sophia could site a little glimpse of light—possibly a small town or a village. "Yes, Sophia this is our best chance," Lucas said, his voice hoarse. "Let's move there quickly and see if we can find help. But we need to be careful. Damian’s men could be anywhere." Sophia shook her head, though her mind was still spinning. How come my life has gone through this trouble? She had been thrust into a world of crime, deceit, and danger, and she had no idea how to escape it. As they progressed in the journey toward the distant lights, a new thought appeared into her mind—a thought that made her stomach twist with fear. What if Lucas wasn’t telling her the entire truth and everything she needs to know? Sophia had so much faith in Lucas so much so that she had the courage that Lucas will not lead her to where her life will be ruined. Sophia has been confused for a while as regards the brave attitude he had towards defending her from every plans of Damian Sophia glanced at him, his face set in a grim expression as he led her through the forest. He had saved her life, and yet, there was something in his eyes—a darkness she hadn’t noticed before. "Lucas," she began, her voice trembling slightly. "Why are you helping me? I mean, really helping me?" He stopped, turning to look at her, his expression unreadable. "I told you, Sophia. I want to take Damian down. I want to stop him from hurting anyone else." Lucas hesitated, his gaze flickering to the ground. "Damian is not just involved in illegal business, he operates with people who does not care about peoples life and can eliminate anyone who dare cross their way. Sophia felt a chill run down her spine. "What kind of people?" "We’re going to get out of this," Lucas said, his voice firm. "I promise." But as they continued toward the distant lights, Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still wrong. There was something Lucas wasn’t telling her—something that could change everything. And she wasn’t sure if she was ready to find out what it was.
