5 The world outside the walls of the village complex was not that much different from the future. The trees stood tall and close together so that one could hardly venture off the road. We reached the intersection where we had met the man on the cart and turned down the road in the direction we should have traveled. “Damn that old man. . .” Caius muttered at my side. Sage shot him a warning glance, and I noticed Mori cast a quick look at us before he resumed his guard on the road ahead of us. The path was well-traveled by carts and pedestrians alike so that we needed to avoid the ruts in the middle.
