As the memory faded and the real world returned, Rowan and Ash found themselves back in the clearing before the ancient tree. The Keeper of Secrets stood before them, her expression inscrutable.
“You have done what many thought impossible,” she said, her voice filled with a mixture of respect and caution. “But remember this: magic always leaves a trace. Though the curse is broken, there may be those who seek to restore it.”
Rowan’s smile faded, a chill settling over her. “What do you mean?”
The Keeper looked at Ash, her gaze piercing. “The magic that cursed you was powerful, crafted by those with great skill and even greater malice. They will sense the shift, and they may come for you.”
Ash squared his shoulders, his hand tightening around Rowan’s. “If they come, we’ll be ready.”
The Keeper nodded, her gaze softening. “Very well. But be cautious, both of you. The path ahead is still shadowed by danger. Trust in each other, and remember: light and darkness are two sides of the same coin. To truly conquer the darkness, you must remain vigilant.”
With that, she turned and faded into the shadows, leaving Rowan and Ash standing alone in the clearing.
Section 5: The Beginning of a New Life
As they made their way back to Rowan’s cottage, the air felt lighter, filled with the scent of fresh rain and blooming wildflowers. For the first time in years, Ash walked with a sense of peace, free from the burden that had haunted him for so long. Rowan could see it in his face, the lightness in his step, and it filled her with a warmth she hadn’t known was possible.
When they reached the cottage, Ash turned to her, his eyes filled with gratitude. “Rowan… I don’t have the words to thank you. You’ve given me back my life.”
She smiled, reaching up to brush a lock of hair from his face. “You don’t need words. Just stay by my side, Ash. That’s all I need.”
He pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers. “I promise, I’m not going anywhere.”
As the first stars began to twinkle in the sky above, Rowan felt a sense of contentment settle over her. She had found something precious in Ash—something she had never expected, yet now couldn’t imagine her life without. Their journey had begun in darkness, but now, together, they would walk into the light.
