The next morning, Rowan woke to the sound of footsteps outside her cottage. Her heart raced as she hurried to the window, peering out cautiously. A figure stood at the edge of the clearing, partially hidden by the trees.
Rowan’s breath caught. The figure was cloaked in black, their face obscured by a hood. She felt a chill run down her spine, the stranger’s presence somehow more unsettling than any shadow or dark magic she’d ever encountered.
“Who… who are you?” she called out, her voice steady despite her fear.
The figure took a step forward, lowering their hood to reveal a pale, angular face framed by long, raven-black hair. Their eyes were a piercing, unnatural shade of green, much like the Keeper’s.
“I am merely a seeker of truths,” the stranger replied, their voice smooth and cold. “I have come in search of the one who defied the ancient curse.”
Rowan’s heart sank. She knew, without a doubt, that this was the danger the Keeper had warned them about.
“Why are you looking for him?” Rowan demanded, stepping outside and squaring her shoulders. “Ash is free now. He’s no threat to anyone.”
The stranger tilted their head, a thin smile tugging at the corners of their mouth. “Is that so? Magic like his does not simply disappear, child. When one breaks a curse of such magnitude, it disrupts the balance. There are forces that seek to correct such… disruptions.”
Rowan’s hands clenched into fists. “We didn’t ask for this curse. Ash deserves his freedom.”
The stranger’s gaze hardened, their voice turning cold as steel. “Freedom comes at a price, and he has yet to pay it.”
At that moment, Ash appeared at the doorway, his eyes narrowing as he took in the stranger’s presence. “Who are you, and what do you want with me?” he demanded, his voice filled with defiance.
The stranger’s gaze shifted to Ash, their expression unreadable. “You should never have broken the curse,” they said, their tone laced with an ominous finality. “It was not yours to break.”
Without another word, the stranger turned and vanished into the forest, leaving Rowan and Ash standing in tense silence.
Rowan felt a shiver run through her. “Ash, we can’t ignore this. Whoever they are… they’re not going to stop.”
Ash took her hand, his grip firm and reassuring. “Then we’ll be ready. I’m not letting anyone take this life away from me—not now, and not ever.”
